Ice cream

I am an ice cream fiend. Over here (Ontario) the Loblaw's stores have their own brand called President's Choice/PC (good stuff). The PC Coconut Cream Pie ice cream is ridiculously good.

I love ice cream, and have a hard time understanding people that don't. What's not to like?

I had my first taste of Culver's frozen custard this evening and it was incredible! I also had a butter burger before that so I'm thinking about calling Rotorooter Monday to see if they do arteries.

My family has a tradition of making home made ice cream with a hand crank ice cream freezer. None of those new fangled electric models for my Dad. It is such a tradition after all these years that it just doesn't seem like home made ice cream unless you have a sore shoulder.

I'll second Cherry Garcia. That stuff is amazing.

Breyers is my favorite for regular old vanilla.

Dieters should try Edy's Grand Light (not sure if Slow Churned is the replacement or something different). Edy's makes some really good reduced calorie stuff. 1/3 less I think.

For a long time ice cream in the UK was mostly pretty dull stuff, with a few honourable exceptions such as Henley Ice Cream available at The Henley Ice Cream Parlour

In France I discovered pistatio ice cream, for a long time my favourite!
More recently, my favourite dessert in France has been one scoop of blackcurrant sorbet and one scoop of lemon sorbet...mmmmm!

Decent ice cream is getting more available over here now, though.

Andy.

Man, I almost forgot Graeter's ice cream!

I'd be tarred and feathered and run out of Cincinnati on a rail if I forgot to mention them in a thread on ice cream. In business for over 100 years. All the ice cream is made in small batches in a kitchen/factory downtown. The Black Raspberry Chip is one of their most famous flavors and I've never seen it anywhere else.

We have another old, family owned ice cream business here in Porkopolis, Aglamesis' Brothers. The ice cream parlor in Oakley still has the marble counter and tables and a real soda fountain.

Between these places, United Dairy Farmers (makers of Homemade Brand ice cream) covenience stores, and all the soft serve joints, Cincinnati is an ice cream lover's paradise.

Most of the year, I rarely eat ice cream. But when June rolls around, I start eating it again. And by this time of the year, I'm going on an ice cream bender almost every weekend.

I like vanilla chocolate chip, mint chocolate chip, and neapolitan. My new favorite though is the Haagen-Daz Vanilla Fudge Brownie. One pint for Saturday, one pint for Sunday.

Oh yeah...it's ice cream season.

Anybody else got favorites?

In 1942 sugar was rationed, the icehouse couldn't deliver to homes because of gas rationing , no fresh fruit because the subs had a Woflpack just outside our seaport town. A candy bar was like Christmas .
We had a young ,pretty cousin staying with us so she could work at a nearby Army Anti-aircraft Base PX. She asked if she could bring a date home for Sunday dinner. Sure,we were patriotic & I as a 12 year old boy looked forward to the dinner. Her young man was a cook & was so nice that we invited him again. We said I'd ride my bike to town & get a small block of ice & we'd save our sugar ration & make vanilla ice cream. Wow !
Sunday finally arrived & I got the ice, Since I was the man of the house my job would be to crank the old churn. Ernie said he'd help so I craftily started cranking, knowing the last few minutes were arm killers. Just as I was pouring the mixture in the bucket he stopped me & took a small pouch from his shirt pocket & poured it in. Wouldnt tell me what that dirty.dandruff looking stuff was. When we finished we took the dasher out & as usual,I licked it & got a great surprise ! That ugly mess was dehydrated banana flakes. Best dad-blamed icecream I ever ate !

Those were the days........

Uncle Alan :)
