I'd love to help.

Are you able to machine a piece of steel that could be used to stamp a logo into leather or brand wood?

Yes I think it would be fairly easy. But it depends in the complexity of the design. Send me a black and white image of what design you had in mind and the size you want and I'll let you know if I could do it.

I still need to finish the artwork but I will be in touch. Need any wood related favors, just let me know.

That is incredibly kind of you. I love nice people. And I'm getting into knife making myself so I just might take you up on cutting out a pattern for me ;) Thank you much!

P.S. I'm a machinist too but I don't have any machinist tools at home and not employed as a machinist either.

Hi Chris,

Here's a project that might be useful to a number of folks in the shop. Not sure if it is best handled via machining or otherwise though.

I've been wanting a simple way of adjusting the working height of shop equipment, such as a belt grinder. :D

The simplest I've seen is a pipe inside another. Something like this...

attachment.php

I've been looking around for the pipe to do it. Looks like a sched 40 2.5" pipe might have enough clearance to slide inside a 3" one. I'm thinking that halving a coupling for the 3"pipe and welding ears on it might work for the clamp part, but maybe it could be machined?

Pipe...Diameter...Diameter
...Nominal
Size...External
...Internal...Thickness
=======================================
2 ½
.....2.88........2.47.......0.2
3
.......3.5.........3.07.......0.22
3 ½
.....4.00........3.55.......0.23
4
.......4.5.........4.03.......0.24

Anyway, some sort of coupling that would be easy to ship and attach to the proper sized pipes might be a cool solution for elevating the functionality of a lot of grinder tables!

Anyone have any thoughts for something like this?

Aloha, Phil

Who's Chris?? :D

I think the tabs might be better suited for a welder with a drill press. But I would also consider square tubing. You can get sizes that fit nicely into eachother drill holes an inch apart in the smaller tube and make some pins to hold it in place. I would also make some set screws so that once you have it at height you can tighten it down and eliminate the wobble

Phil, I made a sliding, removable arm for my vise on my welding table. The idea could easily be reworked for what you say.

I have a welder and a drill press. Email me, let's talk. :)

Well, I can't seem to post the picture. Picassa is being dumb. Email me and I'll show you.

Thanks medicevans (sorry, have forgotten your name) but aren't you swamped with raising kids, a health challenged wife and super long hours at work? If you have time to send me pix of your vise mount setup that would be great, but don't over do it.

Mahalo (THANKS), Phil

For some reason, I had a couple of minutes after the little baby went back to sleep and the big kids and Heather weren't awake yet. :)

Hope they helped. Feel free to use them in any way needed, including reposting.

Quick update here. I got some responses from a few of you and I'm excited to start working on some projects.

I will be making some tracking and drive wheels for a GIB

I'm very excited to be working on a project with Stacy! Stay tuned for that one. (I got the easy part :) )

And I got a couple requests for carbide faced file guides. I bought material to make 5 of them we will see how it goes and I'll be posting pictures of the process.

Also I will have to turn down any other request right now because these projects will keep me busy for a while. But when these are finished?? Who knows.

Pictures of finished projects would be really helpful for other aspiring knifemakers!
