Idea or not

Personally not a fan of tanto style blades - but I really like my mini-razel - go figure.
I don't see it as a huge leap to go from sharpened swedge point blades to adding a line of Tanto style blades - I'm not likely to buy either, but am not going to shoot down others who might want to.

As to a scandi grind on a 3/16" thick blade - that doesn't sound terribly practical to me, either. Talk about an obtuse edge - it would be even steeper/thicker than the RC5 that people seem to be constantly complaining about.

Tanto blades are definitly tacti-cool, but it has been my experience that limits it's usefulness. Given how often I stab thru armor I personally will not buy another tanto.

I don't know why anti-tanto comments seem to focus on this stabbing through armor business. That may or may not have been the original reason for the style, but it isn't why anyone uses it now. If you prefer other styles, fine, no one minds you voting against the tanto. But why disrespect our choice?

I just wanted to add that I realized this morning that my EDC folder for the last 7 monthshas been a Tanto SOG Twitch XL. Have yet to find a situation where is has been impractical.

I'm not trying to kiss Hindend, but,I agree with Jeff about a knife just being a sharpened piece of steel. It's the user that makes any knife work for them.

so you do have a tanto? kool-aid drinker!:D

tacti-cool is at least not boring. often times when i hear people use the word tacti-cool it's usually because they strictly use iron sights on their rifles and never used powered scopes or red dot optics and have a fear of broadening their horizon. you at least have a tanto and i assume tried using it then formed an opinion which is the way to go about it. i can respect that.

i only have one, a ka-bar short tanto. i'd like to see an esee spin on it. variety is good for the industry

I am not saying that a tanto can't be an edc and not perform reasonably well. A small double edge blade could also perform reasonable well in most day to day situations. In situations that Esee knives are designed for a tanto is not the best blade shape/style. The american tanto blade is far superior at penetrating tuff materials and not damaging the tip. It's shines best in a tactical scenario. In a more general applications it does not perform as well as other blades. A blade with a curved belly lends itself to better performance at slicing, cutting, skinning etc. Esee knives are survival knives first and tactical knives second.

I do own a couple of tacti-cool blades and not just tanto style. I own a WWII dagger, a gerber Applegate-Fairbairn full size folder, the tanto version of the kabar USMC and a few others. I love them for what they are.

Eh, don't really like tantos either (even Japanese tantos), but there seems to be a lot of people who do.

Esee knives are survival knives first and tactical knives second.

look at the 2009 catalog - esee sees themselves as maker of both types of knives actually, no preference of one over the other. if you want to split hair, the 2nd page shows design priority towards tactical over "survival"

to me, survival is survival regardless if i'm in the woods or walking through the concrete jungle. like jeff said, it's just a sharpened piece of steel.

How about a blade shaped like the Chris Reeves sable series or even a warnie

honestly, i really like the standard drop point.

but an insigno type shape would be pretty cool ;)

I would not buy a tanto ESEE. I might go so far as to say I will not buy any tanto ever again. They look cool, but I can almost say I hate using a tanto. I've tried them. I have 4 (of 5 that I have ever bought). One was used extensively, until I finally gave up trying to make it work for me. One I managed to sell because it was a rather desired piece, and even then I sold it at a loss. One is a piece of crap that was made for me cheap. And the two others ARE essentially safe queens, because one is out of production, and the other is a Simonich custom that I bought used. That one will never get away.

Nope, not into tantos for using using.

I carry a tanto all the time but it's a defensive knife. I also carry a second knife (not tanto) for utility though.

I like the idea of a tanto but I have enough so wouldn't get one.

As far as the topic of an ESEE Tanto design.....I would probably buy one if they produced it. I like a tanto blade and find it useful. As many have said ESEE is geared towards survival as well as Law Enforcement. I would say there is a niche for tanto's for LEO's.

That is one sweet blade. I'm not on for a tanto but I would be interested in a Wharncliffe blade.
