Idea or not

Personally not a fan of tanto style blades - but I really like my mini-razel - go figure.
I don't see it as a huge leap to go from sharpened swedge point blades to adding a line of Tanto style blades - I'm not likely to buy either, but am not going to shoot down others who might want to.

As to a scandi grind on a 3/16" thick blade - that doesn't sound terribly practical to me, either. Talk about an obtuse edge - it would be even steeper/thicker than the RC5 that people seem to be constantly complaining about.

Really? The woodlore Ray Mears knife is a 4mm scandi and I've not found it cumbersome at all. But it doesn't have a secondary bevel like the RC5. I think the woodlore inclusive angle is 28 degrees from memory.

cool - I retract my statement about it being too steep.
I'd kind of like to see that - I've never seen a scandi over 3mm thick.
Did he go with a standard low grind line, or is it closer to a half-height saber grind with no secondary?

A fairly low grind, it comes about 1/4 of the way up the blade. No secondary bevel but he does use a micro bevel, which I've added to mine, doesn't seem to effect the cutting much but adds alot to the edge retention.

I've found the thicker stock scandi interesting: when battoning, after the initial strike, the shoulders of the grind split the wood, without the edge coming in contact with it.

interesting.
I like scandis for a lot of uses - usually pretty no-frills designs, which I appreciate.
thanks for the info!

not familiar with the CRK Sable series.
Here's a look at the Sable: http://www.1sks.com/store/chris-reeve-sable-4.html

Here are my Sables, a Sable III with its 4" blade and an 18" Sable with a 12.5" blade.

Quite frankly I like a traditional tanto profile, although I have never owned one.

I think a tanto would make an excellent utility knife personally.
