Ideas for stopping my knife pocket clip from scratching my car?

I know it's a bit of a silly question, but I have an automatic knife I really enjoy carrying, with a horrible pocket clip attached to it. The tip of the pocket clip sticks out at an angle a little longer than most (like my Ultratech), so if I'm not consciously paying attention and brush up against my car or someone else's, just a bit, it'll leave a nice scratch. Had it happen to my brand new car already and to my old car at one point too.

I've tried plasti-dipping the pocket clip and shrink-tubing the pocket clip (with additional superglue). Both don't seem to last for too long. Was just curious if you guys had any other ideas before I decide to just leave the knife at home and carry something different. I love the wire-style pocket clips like my Spyderco Smallfly has on it, if someone was in the business of producing those it'd be perfect.

Thanks!

Mine gets dropped down into my pocket when I'm near my car. Not very helpful I'm guessing, but there really isn't any type of pocket clip that isn't at risk of scratching a car if it makes contact.

Sell your car?

In all seriousness, I would think about carrying your knife upright next to your wallet if they will both fit.
Due to you being used to a wallet, the knife blends right in and doesn't stand out too much to you.

You can grind the pocket clip down, or even cut it shorter. I do that all the time. There are also lots of aftermarket clips, some even without drilled holes so you can line it up to your knifes original pocket clip threaded holes.

Is it a carved Ti pocket clip, or spring/ bent metal clip?

LOL, I was just about to suggest riding a motorcycle myself.

If the knife has a horrible pocket clip, then it's time you removed it and went clipless. Or like ATJ999 said, get to seeking out a replacement.

When all else fails, sandpaper magic.

Thanks guys, I'll look more into a replacement pocket clip and if all else fails I'll just have to get used to carrying it in my back pocket. I'm naturally a righty so swapping my carrying side would be too awkward for fast deployment of the knife.

How the heck do you slide your hips against your car so much? I make trips back and forth all day to my truck for tools and never once had this happen to me.

Maybe start getting into slipjoints and forget about clipped carry completely?

If the clip is straight you can put some heat shrink tubing over it and shrink it in place. Just make sure the clip's tip is covered. You probably need to take the clip off, and it gets more difficult when the clip has an irregular shape.

You might be able to use Plastidip too, but I haven't tried it.

I was curious as to why he has to slide down the side of his car too?
Possibly lives/works in a city or densely populated area?

What about a G&G Hawk Clip?

You don't really realize how often people brush up against cars until you have a car that you don't want anyone brushing up against.

The paint isn't the only issue, either. Center consoles and even the bottom of the steering wheel have fallen victim to scratches by a pocket knife clip for me.

Go clipless. Switch to back pocket but then you have another problem; car seats and sofas and so forth.

I don't think I have ever scratched a car, but I am always paranoid I will. Every time I am close to a car, my hand automatically covers the clip. Its habit at this point. I know its not a solution to the OP's dilemma, but wanted to let him know there are others out there

I work out of my pickup a fair amount and use the tool box as a writing platform. As a result, I am snuggling up to the side of the pickup often and clips are a big problem. (People asked why or how it happens, eh.) My solution was to keep knife in back pocket (or leg pocket on cargo pants/shorts) and remove when I am sitting inside my vehicle or sitting on upholstered chairs. My other issue with clips is I tend to catch them on the side of my seat getting in to the pickup. There is a tear from that and in general I don't think the advantage of a clip outweighs the damage to me.

I might add that belt buckles are a problem too for me.

Wait until someone sees you scratch THEIR car and force you to have the scratch repaired. Adds a sense of risk or cost into the equation.

Other option is carry a small fixed blade.

I don't get it either?!

This must be a human error thing.

I only carry knives via pocket clip, and have had a clip sticking out of my pocket 24/7 for many many years....

I have Never even come close to scratching a car with it.

I know I am not doing anything special, however, if I am working on a car then anything that can scratch it (knife/rings/etc) go in my pocket or are put to the side.

You might read my post just prior to yours and you will read how I have scratched the side of my pickup more than once due to a pocket clip. of course it's human error. Just about everything is in one form or another.... blades closing on your fingers (lock vs no lock) and so forth.....
