If its only going to happen once it needs to be a knife made to last, and one easy to disassemble for cleaning.

Since this is a hypothtical situation no one here will be affected by taxes either, so pick what you want. There will be a new tax for the top 1% that will pay for these,lol.
And what about the ones over 18 before the law takes affect??? I say they all get one if they apply in the six months after the law is enacted. We can take over Mexico, fix it up a bit, and flip it to pay for those:p

All joking aside, this^ of course. I can already see the national debate for a red, white, and blue fantasy eagle knife and the words being muttered, "if you like your current knife you can keep it.":D

Well, if you want maximum utility for the most people, it would have to be a Leatherman. Taking cost as a factor, probably a Rebar. That should take care of the knife and general tool needs for 95+% of the population.

4) American made Bowie (no specific manufacturer so long as it's a quality USA one, and stupidly huge also)
5) Leatherman (Whatever model has the most gadgets that it's too wide to hold)

I was going to say that your government was going to use your taxes to give knives to non-US citizens. In the spirit of fairness.
 
There's just one catch to being issued your knife. You have to say the Pledge of Allegiance in English and facing the American flag. :D
