If every citizen of the United States received a standard issue knife...

The Swiss seem to take preparation and civil defense seriously. Perhaps US households could prepare for emergencies with some basic tools, food and water.

Some time ago, I noted that the US military developed a "trail cutting machete" in 1968. Shorter and lighter than the 18 inch machete issued today, and with a squared tip for light digging, the tool was tested by the military in Vietnam. Perhaps a tool like this one, along with pocket knives, should be part of every household. People in the US might be more ready for the next hurricane, flood, earthquake or other natural disaster.

I would say the Gerber LST. The larger one. My dad gave me one for my 13th birthday. It was my EDC until two years ago when I purchased a Benchmade 851. (I'm 40) I used and abused that knife and it still takes an edge like a champ. Very practical knife that doesn't cost much.

Along this topic, every child should be thought how to use a knife. It is one of the most valuable tools ever made.

Just my two cents...

Hey, I've got one of those! I've been thinking something more like a SAK or the "Demo" knife we used to give our troops.

The Gerber would be a good option though. My wife could carry one in her purse. They could be offered with different color handles. Red, white, and blue!

A few years ago, I bought one for my daughter. She's only eight, but can't wait to get it. She asks me once a week if she is old enough for it. I think they are great knives. A great design really. When I feel that she is ready, it will be hers.
