If I could have the ideal handgun

Don't know if this belongs here, but I am curious about other people's ideal guns.

Here's mine: An all-steel Beretta 92 in .357 Sig with an extended slide and a
7 inch barrel. :D

call me old fashioned, but I would go with either a Smith and Wesson Model 10 or even a good single action revolver like the Ruger blackhawk. Either one in .357 Mag. (Model 13 for the S&W the 10 was .38 if I remember right.)

Id chose a revolver, because you don't have to worry about it as much as you do with a pistol.

Bah.

Course I really dig the SR9, or did when I fondled it in the shop. Sadly it's got a whole lot of production issues thus far.

mine would be a toss up between a k frame smith {10,64,65,19,66 etc} and a good quality 1911 .45 auto. had several over the years and have always been pleased with them. As far as the H&K P7 i wanted one for several years and finally got one in about 1985, this particular specimen was a picky eater and went down the road for, you guessed it a .45 series 70 colt which ate like a pig. i was very disappointed in the p7 but i'm sure it was probably just my particular gun. just my luck since H&K is a quality company.

I don't own a handgun and never have. Grew up shooting a Ruger .22 Mark II - that thing could hit cans!

Here's what I'd be most interested in learning to use now, the Ruger Bisley:

I'd like to convert a Para-Ordnance P16 to 10mm. 16+1 rounds of full house ten millie in a 1911 platform is a whole lot of ass-stompery.

You can. H&K P7.

Best combat pistol I've ever had the pleasure to own and/or use, and not by an insignificant margin. If we're free to dream, however, I'd be interested to see one of the .40 S&W versions with maybe a 4.75" barrel - just for comparison's sake. :D

The P7M10 is a clunker. So is the P7M13 for that matter, but they really screwed up the P7 adapting it to .40 cal.
The P7M8, on the other hand, is a sweet package. I like it for the fixed barrel concept better than the squeeze cocker, personally, though. Like the SIG P225 that was "developed" for the same trials better. The P7K3 always had my interest, but I never got to shoot one.

I don't know that there's anything like an "ideal" handgun, but the 4" and 6" Colt Python, 4 5/8" Ruger Target Competition Model, Glock 23, and SIG-Sauer P220 in .45ACP top my list of guns most ideally suited to their calibers-and with the exception of the Glock, are some of the best shooters in those calibers, IMO.

Beautiful, accurate, and reliable. What more do you need?

Stainless steel for starters.:D

I love the 1911...but am still not committed to it for CCW...when I can, it sure ain't in this state.

I think the Sig Sauer P229 is pretty close to perfect....40 S&W/.357 SIG convertible with just the barrel, not too big, not too small, nice hand-filling Hogue grips, or wood panels if you like 'em slimmer, GREAT sights, more accurate than I am, and idiot proof controls...which is the part of the 1911 that I am not sure about.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

In an actual emergency situation, the .22 you have in your pocket will do you a lot more good than the beautiful 1911 .45 you left in your safe at home because it was too big and heavy to carry.

I hear a lot of guys say, "I wouldn't be caught dead carrying with anything less than my 1911 .45." Yeah, that probably true. You'll be found dead carrying nothing at all because you left your iron tumor at home.

Oh, I know that there are guys who do routinely and religiously carry concealed big handguns including 1911s all day, everyday. If you can do that, then my hat is off to you.

This question of "what's the best gun" is all to common. If concealed carry is your application, then, in my opinion, the single most important question to ask is not caliber or capacity or or even accuracy or "stopping power," but simply will you carry it? Because the biggest, bestest, baddest gun there is does you no good if you don't carry it.

i still dont see why people cant conceal a 1911, im 5'7 and 120 lbs and i can conceal a 1911. my only complaint was the beavertail pokeing my ribs when im driving so i addressed that issue.

I agree. It is rather flat and AFAIK the 1911 has been concealed for a very long time. I think it just takes a little more work and thought.

As I said,

Why would one limit oneself to 8 rounds of anything? My XD 45, with Arrendondo base plates, carries 15, and is smaller than the 1911, and only slightly larger than the P7, of which I own both the P7 and P7M8.

The perfect gun would aim itself and hit vitals automatically.

I'd like a H&K P7M7. But they only made two. A single-stack P7 in .40S&W would be awesome too. Oh well, I'll just stick to my more realistic dream of owning a P7 PSP or P7M8. Eventually....

Either a customized Colt Series 70 or a Les Baer TRS.

I'm already pretty well covered With my Custom Colt XSE and my 5'' unfluted S&W 686 in satin.

I unfortunately don't know ANYTHING about rifles or what I want in that dept. So far I have a Mosin Nagant and a Ruger 10-22.

i edc'd either a 1911, a SIG P220 or a berretta 92 for probably 10 years, its not so bad with a good holster/belt combo, and the right clothes, its certainly a lot harder to deal with daily than what i edc now a kahr PM9 lol.

back in the '80s there werent a lot of compacts around so ya had to live with what ya had to live with.

i have played around with a H&K P7 some and its ok too, back in the day it was one of the smaller 9MMs, fairly reliable with certain ammo (mine was a little picky), plenty accurate, one con imho is that theres not just tons of holsters around for it, it was also bulkier than i had imagined (in pics it looks smaller, YMMV though).

right now i'm very happy with my kahr PM9 for edc, plenty accurate, very reliable, light, slim, easy to live with on a daily basis, i think its the very best edc pistol around bar none,
