If I could have the ideal handgun

Ideal for what?

Based on the initial post I'm guessing something that is real uncommon but would be cool?

In that case I'd like a Sig 229, with a modern H&K post patent Glock style trigger. Sig triggers are inferior IMO. It may be because I had recently been practicing more with Glocks, but I found I could shoot my friends new .40 H&K better than I could shoot my own Sig 229. It all came down to the trigger I think.

Glock 19 is my ideal handgun, every one I own has functioned flawlessly out of the box.

Why would one limit oneself to 8 rounds of anything? My XD 45, with Arrendondo base plates, carries 15, and is smaller than the 1911, and only slightly larger than the P7, of which I own both the P7 and P7M8.

why would it be a limitation, i dont plan on using all 8. ive hand fitted every aspect of that particular remington rand what i could not buy i made. it will feed empty cases and even though the slides alittle loose and it rattles slightly i keep it that way so it wont jam. i had a rather scary experiance one time with a dirty xd. it will hit what i need it to when i need it to and where i need it to.

btw, the only other pistols that ill carry are the S&W model 52 and the sig 226

My dream gun no CCW considered, S&W 327PC:D .357 mag

For home/ccw: Sig P229 .40

For just CCW: S&W 342PD .357 mag

I already have mine, a Smith and Weson 686 plus loaded with silvertips ready to called for action if needed. A dream gun creation would be a 357 mag in a glock frame with 20 mag.

I don't plan on getting in a car wreck either. But I wear my seatbelt. I plan on the worst.

If that means I have 12 rounds left at the end of an altercation, it's my lucky day.

I like my PT1911 and carry it most days. Otherwise it is a S&W 642 (which always comes along anyways)

If I was going to go for ideal, it would probably be a top end 1911.

Seatbelts won't protect you in all situations. They protect you in the majority of accidents. Race-card drivers use five-point harnesses, but they're not perfect either. Maybe our cars should have ejection seats?

You have to balance the cost with the risk.

If the risk you think you will face requires twenty rounds, why not thirty? Or fifty? Or seventy? Where do you stop? And will a handgun be enough? Why stop there? How about something shoulder-launched? But what if that's not enough?

At some point, realistically, you have to draw the line and say, "This is enough for most situations I expect. This is enough fire power. This is enough capacity." And, as you decide where to put that line, you also, again, have to consider what you realistically will carry. Depending on details, a .45 round weighs 2/3 to 3/4 of an ounce. Twenty rounds of that tilt the scale at 13-15 ounces, about a pound.

Or no seatbelts at all?

I agree. I know of far too many incidents where 8 isn't enough.

I stop, on my body, at 70. Then I go for the rifle in the car, where another 240 awaits.

I'm well aware. I don't "expect" anything. I simply plan for the worst. I figure the 70 rounds on my body, then the 240 rounds for my rifle will at least get me to a dropped weapon.

Then I can keep going.

I carry 8 1/2 pounds daily. Very comfortably, because it's balanced.

I wouldn't do it off a belt holster, but with a shoulder rig, I don't even feel it.

I have my ideal CCW handgun already...S&W325PD back up with the classic Ka-Bar

I'm partial to Glocks and have a 40 cal that sits by me at home and goes with me in the car and in the winter when I got big enough pockets for it! :D For regular carry I have a Keltec 9mm that I just slip into my front pants pocket. I want a 40 cal Keltec but since they quit making them I haven't been able to find one but I'm still looking! I've been reading up on FN's Five-Seven and might get one of those soon.
Here's a good web site that has lots of information about guns for you!

Sig P229 SAS in .40 S&W. A great all around piece, IMHO. CCW, HD, Bug Out Bag, etc..

IF... and that's a giant hypothetical and probably massive pipe dream IF, I ever get the chance to CCW, it will be my Colt CCO. I can hit the third nipple on a gnat at 25' with this gun. My back up and/or second choice would be my Colt .38 I'll see if my pics will pull up. And my dream choice... bobtail Ed Brown.

Crap... forgot to see if I can post my pics...

Could only get the pic of the Colt .38 to post. Sorry!

I also plan on getting an XD-45, preferrably 5" in bi-tone before the friggin November elections... just in case the gun grabbers, I mean the Democraps, get elected in.
