If I could have the ideal handgun

I have 2 choices:

1.Colt 1911 .45

2.S&W 686 .357

I'm a sucker for the classics.:D

My ideal? I would like a LeMat done up Webley top-break style, .45 acp with moon clips and a 20 gauge central barrel. :D

For the real world, a Glock 26/19 & S&W 642 cover most situations just fine. A XD Compact 45 backing up a Storekeeper / Sheriff's Model style SAA would be a nice combo for heavier days though....

I agree and stand with the "depends on what ya want to or need to use it for" crowd. Like with knives it depends. CCW,hunting, home defense, target?

A four to six inch barreled medium frame 357 with adjustable sights would do a decent all around job up to deer and black bear. Not perfect for all but good all around.

Personally like my knives I have several for different uses. I have small ccw and large uber magnum hunting pistols and a bunch in between.

Since ccw became legal with the permit in Ohio I have been learning the whole little gun with ya vs the big gun at home thing. I am learning holsters and carry too. Like knives ya end up trying a bunch of stuff if resources are available.

I love my auto's but I had found rekindled love affair with my old revolvers a few years back and now with brass and ammo so high - heck who am I kidding I like em all... single shot to full auto :D

For me, I like my Glock 19 with "Laser Grips"and an extra 15 round clip in my modified "Smart Carry" for deep, deep CCW... I can wear it with just a pair of shorts on (no shirt) and won't print. For that matter, I could wear it under my boxer shorts and not print (but that would be kind of hard on the twig and berries!)

For general walk-about town, I might switch to my Glock 19 with "Laser Grips"and an extra two clips in my Tommy's Gun Pack.... I know what your thinkin'... Fanny pack=gun. Not if you put a very visible smallish camera in the front pocket with part of it hangin' out... then it's obviously a camera bag.

Around the house, I like my Glock 19 with "Laser Grips" on my person and have an 870 and a coach gun close by.

You'll note that I only carry one handgun and I'm fond of it... my Glock 19 with "Laser Grips"... ONE hand gun... for ALL occasions... One gun to train with... one gun to learn to be familiar with... one gun and it's feel and familiar sight picture... only one gun, learned to become a natural extension of my hand and eye.

I find changing weapons for different situations to be less "comfortable"... less intuitive... ultimately less proficiency.

One hand gun... but that's just me.:D

I have a Original 70 Series (purchased by my dad in 1975) Colt Combat Commander in Nickle, Modified with a 21 pound return spring, and smoothed and recontoured feed ramp to be able to shoot 230 grain slugs without stovepipeing. (where the slide catches the ejected shell mid flight and jams it straight up to look like a stove pipe) I can clean a 7 round mag in just under 2 secs with it on target (albeit 5-6 m.o.a. group) conceal it on a my side or small of my back, with atleast 2-4 extra mags. Morale of this thread is save your money until you can afford the gun you want, not just what you can afford at the time.

(albeit 5-6 m.o.a. group)

I doubt ya are shooting it that well....

MOA at 100 yards is around 1.5 inch and at 20 yards I doubt ya re shooting a group with a CTC spread of app .2o or less ;) if ya are ya better look to manufacturer sponsorship :D

Did you mean to say 5-6 inch group at 7 yards in 2 seconds?

Bigger the MOA the LESS accurate.

I understand that.... I believe you do not understand what I said....

moa is a standard of measurement of accuracy.

I believe the poster I was razzing meant to say 5-6 INCH groups at short range fast...

what he said was not likely to happen as described.

MOA varies in inches as distance changes...

At 20 yards 25 inches is about 5 minutes of angle.

MOA Calculator

I think the calculator is off..I'll try to find the formulas and do it myself.

Edited for last time...I was wrong. Can't find a good calc or formula, but just extrapolating (coarsely) 5-6" at 100 yards would be 2.5-3" at 50 yards, 1.25-1.5" at 25 yards....so it would be very impresiive fast shooting.

Tim, I want a set of them "Laser Grips" myself~!!!! :D
Man I wish the price would come down on em though!!!

Found mine, brand new on EBay for about $160... They are great for "dry fire" practice! I carry at the ready position, pull up to target on my cat or whatever, give the laser grip a squeeze and see how my aim was. It's great practice when you can't get to the range (at least for developing a sight picture and quick target acquisition). I love 'em!

1.05 at 100, 10.5 at 1000. There's a formula...something about width of path by degree or some crap like that.
I think most of us are safe just saying 1" per 100yds:)

I like Glocks but they sure is ugly! Sigs is purty! Both shoot well, and are dependable. Browning Hi-Powers are nice guns, in either 9mm or 40 cal.
1911s? Well, they are the Harley-Davidson's of autoloaders. Its hard to beat a good autoloader...

Revolvers? S&W 686, Ruger GP100...good guns, but heavy.

Answers? All of the above. It is what works for you. Personally, I carry a S&W 340PD as a BUG. Looking for the perfect autoloader. Presently have a Sig P239 and Glock 35. Honestly, the gun manufacturers are marketing the "personal" and the "compact" pistols but in my opinion, don't really fit the bill. (Really not THAT much difference between a Sig P229 and a P220 as far as dimensions go.)

One other thing to consider is the Smith & Wesson M&P line...I have heard nothing but good things about them.
