If I were shipping out today to the sandbox, my kit would be (in addition to Uncle Sam's) a Scrapyard Regulator, dia fold, Leatherman MUT, Spyderco Manix 2 or CS Recon 1.

What about you?

:thumbup:I am so absolutely impressed by that Scrapyard knife, it does everything well, its a little heavy, but so am I.

Based on what I currently own.
SK5 Trailmaster, Leatherman Surge, Kershaw JYD II, Spyderco Tri-Angle MF rods.

I'd probably take a couple of Moras and Old Hickorys too

I paper clip, 5 rubber bands, 3 tooth picks and a roll of duct tape.

or

LM wave and RC 4

Sayoc-Winkler R&D spiked Hawk
WK II Belt Knife
Leatherman multi-tool
duct tape

Why the toothpicks and would they have tactical frills?

Yes as to asses quickly which is the deadly end. In addition one may also be in the realm of cocktail umbrella.

Back on topic, I don't get why many people want to carry 3+ blades plus that is issued. Weight is a big issue for our troops. Then again we are all knife addicts.

I would take my Andrew Demko Custom or CS Recon 1

Swamp Rat RMD or Busse Tank Buster

I enjoy tinkering with knives, and using them. Some guys like to watch movies or read comic books in their spare time. I like playing with knives.

I'd rather spend an hour sharpening or chopping pallets into toothpics than sitting in a kids pool playing cards.

Without doubt my Reg :D

But most likely all three

In 03, I brought:

Emerson Commander... Later gave it to a buddy
Gerber AF Covert folder... double edged it and gave it to a medic buddy
S&W boot knife... gave it as trade fodder for Copenhagen I think
BM30spl... got reprimanded for having a "deadly/dangerous" weapon while I carried a belt fed machine gun.

During my tour, I bought:

MT D/A Socom... right pocket carry for majority of my tour.
MT CFO2 dagger logo... Reprimanded again for having a nasty weapon.
Cuda Dominator... fell off my body armor while TCB.

Imagine that: an actual veteran in a "what knife for the sandbox" thread! :p CM, which one did you use the most? If you were going back, what would you take now based on your experiences before?

...and thanks again for your service.

My current #1 and #2 choices for a folder are both back at benchmade currently (710 and 527). So I'd go with either my Blur or Ti JYD. For a fixed Blade I'd go with my Buck Nighthawk. Multitool it'd be my Leatherman Wave, although I might have to give the Muk a look.

Baby wipes, man. I'd bring lots of baby wipes. Damn things clean nearly everything.

That, a Manix 2, a small fixed blade, and a couple miniature stones.

I used the D/A Socom the most. Had no problems keeping it clean. I pay attention to detail. Never had a weapons malfunction since basic! On my vest, I kept the Dominator until I lost it and it was a very convenient go-to knife cuz it on your chest. When I noticed it was lost, I added a F/S S30V Native that had OIF on the blade. I had written letters a couple months into my tour to a handful of knife companies since my mom sent me issues of Tactical Knives and Blade every month. Sal Glesser personally sent me a letter along with 5 OIF Natives. One was for me and the rest were for my fire team. Coolest thing a knife company has ever done in my experience. That was later stolen off my vest.

If I were an E2 on a 48 hour recall, I'd take my:

Case small toothpick in the bottom pocket on my BDU trousers with my cigarettes. This knife is for delicate work like first aid or ripping off and sewing on new rank. Also good for opening Copenhagen/Skoal cans.

Cold Steel tanto modded Spartan for right pocket go-to knife. Set up for forward wave draw with a tanto that can be maintained on pretty much any kind of abrasive at hand. The PX on the airfield in Mosul started carrying 1"x3" diamond hones and those are PIA to use on recurves. This knife locks open tighter than a frog's ass.

5160 .150" hunter in African Blackwood by Sam Stoner. Only cost $150 and I made the sheath. If I felt it necessary to carry a fixed blade, this would go high left on my vest. Never had much use for a fixed blade that my folder couldn't do.

Here's a dude in my platoon I convinced to order a MT mini Socom auto. I got a couple guys hooked on MT autos.
