When we returned from vacation this past weekend, I was surprised to find these growing on my chopping block out back. (The Bushfinger is for scale)

I've seen these growing here in years past and I have come across them hiking. I've taken pictures and posted. Shown them to others that know more than me. I've read many web pages about identifying edible mushrooms. I have decided that I have properly identified the sulfershelf mushroom, aka "chicken of the woods". These are fast growing and supposedly have no dangerous lookalikes.

My "chickens" are growing in the telltale shelf form, are pink ish salmon in color, are bright yellow underneath and have no gills.

I've harvested them and have them ready to slice up and sauté!

I certainly hope I'm right. I've had my fair share of morels, but this particular fungus is a first for me. Maybe I'll see you later......

You guys! Come on!

And Brian, you already gifted the coveted original Bushfinger. I still wake up crying at night sometimes....

Anyway, step 2- complete. They are sliced up:

And sauteeing in a pan nicely with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper.

Hmm, they are actually pretty good. Seriously tastes like a cross between chicken and a mushroom. I almost can't put down my fork!

Well, if I'm still here in the next few hours, I am keeping my Bushfinger.

Your probably trippin now, huh? They looked pretty good in the pan. I don't know the reason for eating them, except for one. The ones i purchased never looked like that though. well good luck and please let us know the outcome.

Nice find! Chicken of the woods around here is usually a bright orange. I guess that is variable. I just found some fly agaric at the playground across the street. Not eating those, mind you...

Looks pretty good eating. None of the tree-growing/bracket fungi here will kill you (even if it's not all edible). Hope it's the same there! :)

It's been several hours and I don't feel any ill effects. I'm gonna call this one good. I sliced up over a pound for the freezer and I'm going to share some with a friend who confirmed the ID pre sauté.

I gotta say, it's kinda cool stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something new. Not only did I learn something, but I found out that it was actually good! I'll happily add these to soup, stir fry, rice, etc.

Gotta love what's out there, under your nose.

I suppose this means that you'll be keeping all your cool stuff too, huh? :p

I knew what the y were and so did you. Congratulations on a nice discovery. Those same spots should keep yielding more as long as the conditions are favorable and the mycelium are there.

Looks pretty good while sautéing...man, you're making me hungry. Glad to know they're not only edible but tasty...thanks for risking your life for the collective schmitte:D

The guy who wins dies last with the most toys?

Needs a quasi-religious angle to really be profitable...
