When we returned from vacation this past weekend, I was surprised to find these growing on my chopping block out back. (The Bushfinger is for scale)
I've seen these growing here in years past and I have come across them hiking. I've taken pictures and posted. Shown them to others that know more than me. I've read many web pages about identifying edible mushrooms. I have decided that I have properly identified the sulfershelf mushroom, aka "chicken of the woods". These are fast growing and supposedly have no dangerous lookalikes.
My "chickens" are growing in the telltale shelf form, are pink ish salmon in color, are bright yellow underneath and have no gills.
I've harvested them and have them ready to slice up and sauté!
I certainly hope I'm right. I've had my fair share of morels, but this particular fungus is a first for me. Maybe I'll see you later......
