If I'm wrong, this may be my last post...

:cool:Nice find!! Sadly (for some:D) you'll live a long happy Chicken of the Woods eatin happy life!! Let the other guys get there own cool toys.

Winner winner chicken of the woods dinner.

LOL!

Nice pics Schmittie. Now you feel comfortable identifying them in the woods? Would you still feel trepedation about that first bite?

It is indeed very delicious. My favorite wild mushroom (that i have tried) is a chestnut bolete but I have never found them in enough quantity for a meal.

Lately there have been a lot of abortive entoloma and reddening Lepiota around. Tasty stuff.

I have been told these were edible for some time now. I just had not come across a fresh enough batch to try it out. Now that I have, I do feel very comfortable identifying it. I have no problems eating them in the future.

However, I have over 3 lbs in the freezer right now, so I think the Mrs and I will be fine for a while!

Whoa..

Eating wild 'shrooms...yikes. I'm glad all is well for you. A dangerous undertaking! I've heard that fungi only grow on trees, and are non-toxic--and with 17 years of practice under my belt, I say "No way in hell I'm testing it" lol. As far as I've ever come to know, you
should be on the watch for insects inside the fungi, gills, a cup, or a volva, also changing of coloration. :-) I've studied Dryads saddle,
beefsteak, chicken o' the woods, tinder fungus, and oyster fungus..but still..no way in hell I'm going to be the taste-tester lol! :-)

Would be good pickled?

Curious

:D

The shrooms look delicious, and I guess they are edible! Hang on to that stump, there will be more where they came from. And hang on to your toys :)

Those sure look tasty. Best of luck to you.

The non-lethal poisonous mushrooms make you violently ill right away. You vomit and recover. The really bad ones show no symptoms for perhaps several days, then you die. Just saying... I think that's what I read somewhere anyway. ;)

Sweeet!!!, thats a nice find Schmittie,,,

But the Bushie with the orange liner and lanyard is a beast!!,,

Thanks for sharing :D

Wade

Wade, from your avatar it looks like you have quite a nice Osage Bushfinger. Nice score. I've always wanted one of Andy's handles in Osage.....

(And yes, this BF is a beast! I can't wait to fd deer this season with it!!)

I'm glad it all worked out for you although there was a man in the town my father grew up in that was famous for feeding his mushrooms to his dog before he ate them himself. He normally waited about an hour to see if they had any ill effect upon the dog. His last batch he should have waited two hours to see how they affected the dog...

Great post and pictures. I'll eat morels and puffballs but don't have much skill aside that on mushrooms yet. This inspires me to learn more though and hopefully add mushrooms as part of my foraging tactics.

Get my Morels every year up at Tri-States {Va. - Tn. & Ky = meet} as I have permission to hunt them on a 500 Acre Farm up there and every year I bring back between 5 and 8 large Brown Paper Grocery Bags full and that last me through the year as I vacum pack them and freeze them.! Give me a Porterhouse and some Morels sliced and cooked in Garlic Butter and I am in Heaven.!* Best Mushroom that God put on this Earth.* YUMMMMMMM..!!!!!

Yeah, saw old oysters my last time out. And old honey mushrooms. Will hunt again after work today.

There are three to four types of mushrooms that are so unique and can be found in quantity that they could meet most mushrooms lovers wants and needs from year to year. Morels in the spring, chantrelles in the late summer, hen of the woods, chicken of the woods and elm oysters if you really needs one more. If you have trouble keeping visual cues and labels straight then leave them for someone else to find. Don't eat or imbibe something from the wild because of group pressure.

You guys! Come on!

And Brian, you already gifted the coveted original Bushfinger. I still wake up crying at night sometimes....

Then you'll be glad to know I am working on getting it back...just have to make a two hour drive :)

The mushroom dish looks awesome man! Just needs wild garlic and wild onions!
