If knife brands were car brands...

I thought this would be a fun topic for a thread. Hope to see some hilarious references and explanations.:)
Clark.

I see what you mean. Could be fun.

I'm still ruminating . . .

Here's the best I can do at this point and it is kind'a lame and off the mark but :

1095 blades are the Ferraris; you get a really sharp effective performance but you got to be tuning on it every 400 miles or so.
Lame I know.
The first one that came to mind is the Swiss Army Knives and I need to phrase it just right because I love them but they are the inexpensive knives . I don't want to sound like I am belittling them. That would be a serious misrepresentation . . I'll get back to you.

Annnnnnnd They'eeeeeerrrrrr OFF !

With the amount of arguments that happen over them, Spyderco and Benchmade could be Ford and Chevy.

Strider/CRK/Hinderer:

"Your Chevy sucks!"
"No...your Ford sucks!"
"Does not!"
"Does too!"

Which one is the Yugo?
Gerber came to mind first but there are surely way worse brands out there.

Ive thought about this myself by reputations.

Bradley/DeLorean- Both made a good looking, functional product. Put all their efforts into one product (alias pretty much) and unfortunately went out of business. Both still left their mark on the knife/automotive industry.

Lionsteel/Maserati-Both make beautiful and well made products. While not the top teir of their industry, they seem to have a niche market of people who love them. They have nothing to prove and doesnt matter if someone elses knife/car is better. The owners tend to be happy with what they have. Kind of see that with lotus and caterham enthusiasts (no bragging necessary). Both incredible products, and although both are well known, i feel they are both still underated.

Viper knives/TVR- Both are beautiful, aggressive, yet elegant designs. Both under dogs in their areas, both good products, yet both always seem like they are unfinished. They are extremely nice, but always seem to have a few spots they forgot about.

Whenever i describe knives and companies to my friends (who are gun and car guys) i try to compare them to different car/guns to give them a better idea of the product.

Swiss Army knives are silver camrys they are reliable but cheap and everywhere. Benchmades and spydercos are camaros and mustangs they are higher end but still kinda common. Crk strider etc are lamborghinis and Ferraris. Really really expensive, and most people don't live in circumstances to notice a difference.

Zero Tolerance = Humvee - built for hard use, but if you drive it at full speed into a wall it will damage it.

Busse = Abrams Tank - go ahead and drive it into a wall, but hold on.....

best

Cold steel = Toyota

Built well, good value, not flashy but something you hold onto because it just doesn't stop.

Does anyone agree with this? I don't see any difference between these two. :)

Crusader Forge = Oshkosh

Way overbuilt, extremely expensive, massive... But you still want one!

Related to my Avatar, Becker = BMY Div. Harsco

The BK series is much like my M923A2. Heavy, relatively in-expensive, and supremely utilitarian.

I am going to have to agree here and then that is all that I can add. Unfortunately I probably am more familiar with different knife brands than cars to compare them to. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I've only ever owned 3 vehicles in my life.

Be honest, you signed up just to post that pic! You have been waiting, LOL.

OK . . . who's the Land Rover ? Think old, aluminum body etc.

I once machined a replacement part for a valve on a vintage Land Rover fire truck's water canon. I used stainless steel where the original was brass. I never found out if it worked better or worse.

Here's a rat hole story : It was a clear sunny day, I could see the guy coming up the road in his vintage Land Rover to bring me the worn out part and discuss the deal to have me make him a new one. As he rounded the corner the sun went behind a big cloud, it started to pour rain. I went out with an umbrella and sat in the Land Rover while we firmed up the deal. I popped open the umbrella, got out, went in the house, he drove off down the hill . . . as he went around the bend it stopped raining, the sun popped out and it was a sunny day again.

I SWEAR I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP !

The picture is funny and sad. Still wouldn't go near that guy if he's angry. Also no cop would. They would ask him to drop his weapons and because he can't get rid of that strapped on contraption they might even have to shoot him.

This is hard because there are fewer car companies than knife companies. Analogies are imperfect by their very nature.

Randall Made Knives remind me of Packard cars. Very high quality, but older designs - classic to some, dated to others.

Tesla Motors remind me of Spyderco. Genius founder exercising strong control over company direction, very inventive, innovative product with high cool factor. Tends to be polarizing (love 'em or hate 'em).

Victorinox is a lot like Toyota. All their stuff is at least decent, but not overpriced. Reliable but not super fashionable. Good value.

Buck is like Ford or Chevy. Solid.

Benchmade is like Lincoln or Cadillac. More expensive and solid.

Fallkniven is staid design executed well, like Volvo. Because Sweden.

Citroën make beautiful and unique vehicles seldom seen here in USA. Similar to Laguiole knives. As Tom Magliozzi loved to say, "The French copy no one and no one copies the French."

That's all for now.

Can't shoot a ninja assassin. They're too swift.

Microtech Ultratech = Dodge Viper
Doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's badass and draws attention away from your bald spot.
