If knife brands were car brands...

This is hard because there are fewer car companies than knife companies. Analogies are imperfect by their very nature.

Randall Made Knives remind me of Packard cars. Very high quality, but older designs - classic to some, dated to others.

Tesla Motors remind me of Spyderco. Genius founder exercising strong control over company direction, very inventive, innovative product with high cool factor. Tends to be polarizing (love 'em or hate 'em).

Victorinox is a lot like Toyota. All their stuff is at least decent, but not overpriced. Reliable but not super fashionable. Good value.

Buck is like Ford or Chevy. Solid.

Benchmade is like Lincoln or Cadillac. More expensive and solid.

Fallkniven is staid design executed well, like Volvo. Because Sweden.

Citroën make beautiful and unique vehicles seldom seen here in USA. Similar to Laguiole knives. As Tom Magliozzi loved to say, "The French copy no one and no one copies the French."

That's all for now.

"...there are fewer car companies than knife companies. Analogies are imperfect by their very nature."
You don't say.....

Comparisons:

Spyderco -> Porsche
-Excellent engineering, undeniable performance, and a design quirk that is effective from a functional standpoint but ugly from an aesthetic standpoint (porsche looks like a derpy minivan from behind, but I am sure it's fast as %#^#; spyderco's spidey hole is better than a thumbstud, but neither are particularly good looking).

Benchmade -> BMW
-They just have their own style that just works well. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but does nothing wrong. Pretty solid.

CRKT -> Honda
-Their knives are not quite suited for hard use, but their action and mechanics are very reliable. You won't be able to tow that boat around with your civic, but you'll get great mileage. Their "Lexus" knives are quite cool too.

Cold Steel -> Ford
-Built tough, made from cold rolled steel. Sure to get you where you need to go

Not sure which knives would gain supercar status....maybe customs? No idea

they might even have to shoot him.

Nah . . . look at him . . . he thinks being shot by the cop is all just part of the fun.

Reminds me of the story of Andrew Carnegie’s partner Henry Clay Frick. The story goes that Frick was working late one night on the books, a pissed off employee came in with a gun and shot Frick a couple times. Long story short some others took the would be assassin out on a stretcher and Frick went back to his books and finished his accounting before he went to the hospital.

Some guys are just tougher than the rest of us .

Gerber = Lada. Some people swear by them, I'm sure it's cos they've never driven anything else.
Hm Lada Niva socked on the Autobahn and had to be fixed often was even dangerous when the gas pedal got stuck.
But it was the best off roader I had the pleasure to drive over crop fields. (Took soil samples and some GPS plotting.
The Niva wasn't powerful but very light. While Mitsubishi, Mercedes and others had more power the power was useless once all 4 wheels sunk in completely. The Niva just kept swimming on top.
My colleagues hated it since driving to the job with it was a pain on ears and butt and patience but once at the site it ruled. Only once in the swampland of the Spreewald it had to be saved by a tractor. The other cars I drove got stuck every other week or so.
Basically it outperformed at one task, was bad at everything else and needed lots of maintenance. No idea what kind of company that would be but almost feels like my carbon steel kitchen knife which needs to be cleaned and oiled all the time :-p

I am going to have to agree here and then that is all that I can add. Unfortunately I probably am more familiar with different knife brands than cars to compare them to. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I've only ever owned 3 vehicles in my life.

Be honest, you signed up just to post that pic! You have been waiting, LOL.

Been a long time creeper. When I say long, I mean years. Hahaha! I got this thread idea from the other thread that described brands in one sentence :)

Kershaw -> Honda
-Their knives are not quite suited for hard use, but their action and mechanics are very reliable. You won't be able to tow that boat around with your civic, but you'll get great mileage. Their "Lexus" knives are quite cool too.

Does anyone agree with this? I don't see any difference between these two. :)

Why is he looking at his butt?

In the above pic, both need more duct tape.

For knife = car comparisons, I break it down by price:

You have your el cheapo United, Wartech, Rough Rider, Marbles, Pakistan-made, Boker Magnum stuff no knife enthusiast really wants and is embarrassed to be seen with = used car lot beater (any make), Yugo, etc.

There's the affordable, yet reliable, production models like CRKT, Kershaw, Queen, GEC, Case, Boker Tree, etc. that most people can afford (and get at decent prices here on the BF) = Toyota, Ford, Honda, and most of what you see on the road. Spydercos, by price alone, would be like high end Hondas.

THEN you have the rarified air stuff of high-end production and custom knives like Chris Reeve and the $200+ knives = Lexus, Mercedes, and so on, with customs being more like Lamborginis.

Not exactly a laugh riot, but just the way I see it.

Swiss Army = Toyota, very reliable and they are everywhere.
Older Schrade = Studebaker, classic design and handy, just not around anymore.
Cheap Chinese makes = Yugo, nothing good about them and look terrible.
Gerber = VW, not what they appear to be, look nice, but someone messing up the software. This one may be a stretch, and this is just for fun.
All the expensive ones = like the luxury brands, Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW.
Lastly, Kabar = Chevy or Ford trucks, rugged and will get the job done.

Opinel = Like their cars; leave it in the open for night and it wont go anywhere

Kershaw -> Honda

LOL, I was reading this, and I was thinking, "huh, that description sounds oddly familiar"

But very true

Buck = Jeep.

Bos 420HC - "It's a Buck thing, you wouldn't understand." :)

Can't shoot a ninja assassin. They're too swift.

Microtech Ultratech = Dodge Viper
Doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's badass and draws attention away from your bald spot.

LMAO !! I guess that's how I feel about the ZT 0300. Way too big and heavy for what it offers but that's completely irrelevant when you hold one

I'm assuming you meant "Acura"? I like the analogy, and similarly I see Spyderco as Toyota, high build quality, and with Scion/Toyota/Lexus representing the different segments $-wise in which Spyderco competes. Benchmade is for me more Ford, and CRK equivalent to Mercedes. Medford simply has to be Hummer. Emerson doesn't have a car brand - they are Harley-Davidson.

Strider/CRK/Hinderer:

"Your Chevy sucks!"
"No...your Ford sucks!"
"Does not!"
"Does too!"
*Fisticuffs*

^ From what I've witnessed here on this forum- boy isn't that the truth!

Not really much of a car guy- more of a pickup type guy. I just purchased one of the newer style F150's with the tougher military grade aluminum bodies. As much as I'd like to say that this newer design, is comparable to a big beefy, built like a tank zero tolerance ZT 300- I can't.

I'd say it's more like the 2015 Microtech Socom Delta's...the new model with the aluminum scales. ;)

My older model Ford F150, I would compare to a, Spyderco Military.

FWIW- I came very close to buying my very first Dodge. I test drove a Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab with the V-8 Hemi, with the big wheels & hood scoop; that was one fast, beautifully designed truck & so fun to drive. That Dodge, looked & felt more like that ZT 0300 model I was talking about! I decided to go with the fuel economy & the new 3.5 V-6 engines Ford came out with.

I see KAI as sort of GM

So many completely different ones to choose, from crappy low end (Geo's and Saturn's), destined to fail; to mid tier every day Chevy sedans and suv's, to your American made flagship Kershaw's; Blur, Leek, Knockout etc. Being the Buick's, Camaro, and Trans Am, and then Shun and Zero Tolerance then brings up the Cadillac's, Corvette's and Chevy and GMC Trucks...

Buck = Ford, not near as much variety as GM, but they keep doing the same thing that works. And it works. "Built Buck tough".
Their limited edition and such would account for Lincoln's...

Spyderco is the Toyota/Lexus in my eyes, dependable and reliable, and great reputation, from the Prius to the Tundra, the Lexus LX, reliability is their staple, but at the end of the day, they all have that tell tale similar "look" to them.

Dodge/Chrysler can be summed up together by Benchmade; Axis Lock = HEMI, and from a basic mini grip, to a Gold class collector, they're their own entity doing what they do, and doing it well enough. While not for everybody, they have their fare share of devout followers, they're dependable for what they're designed to do, be it a slicer or workhorse or a Chrysler 300.
-KaBar is the Jeep; no frills, always dependable, built on it's reputation, a true outdoor enthusiast, even if not always the prettiest or the smoothest ride along the highway.

Cold Steel is the Humvee, overbuilt and rugged but highly reliable.

CRKT is Hyundai, had a bad rep for being cheap crap, but has made leaps and bounds with new designs to reestablish credibility and dependability, but face it, it's still a Hyundai.

Böker is the VW, with something for everyone, and a love/hate relationship with public; Loved By many, yet hated by many as well... For every"volkswagon's are great" story, you have an equally convincing "volkswagon's are horrible" tale...

Case is the knife Harley Davidson; American classic, it's a Case, it's a Harley, it's a knife, it's a motorcycle, and their still doing 'em up like they always have, and that's it. Some love 'em, some collect 'em, some can't stand 'em. (But still respect the name).

CRK = Infinity
Hinderer = Range Rover

And that's all I got right now.

Still plenty left though;
Saab, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Maserati, Rolls Royce, Maybach, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche,

And a lot of knives left too...From Gerber to Microtech.
