If only they still made BAIIIs...

I came to the same conclusions as the OP, and finally have settled on the SS4. The Resiprene mudder handle, light weight, 4" INFI blade, and stout tip make it my preferred practical hunter and hiker. I still buy more knives but can't yet figure out why:D. Maybe just to prove to myself that I'm not missing out on something "more perfect" ? It's a continual annoyance.:) Regards, ss.

BTW: I've gone through the same contortions with light-weight hatchets. I'm coming perilously close to carrying a BATac instead. It has a weight of 14.5 oz., 20 or so with a leather sheath, and the chopping ability is close to a small hatchet. So, leave the SS4 behind, pocket knife and BATac instead, drats. I'm nuts. Now, about the need for another more specialized rife, or maybe another "do it all" shotgun: I'm still undecided, just a couple more acqusitions and I should have it figured out.

Hey whisk, I'm still with you on the return of the BAIII's. Bring 'em on!

I'm just not sure you'll gain much more blade if you go from a Vanguard to a BAIII. Some, but not enough to make much difference with a wounded hog. Here's a pic for you. Extremely similar blade shapes. I tried to line the knives up so that the cutting edges start at the same point, but I may have nudged the ABA LE forward just a bit.

LOL, I understand you completely

Thanks for the piccies Guyon, a piccie is worth a thousand words...

I like the Vanguard, but the extra 1/2in and much better steel still has me drooling over the BA. That custom one of yours in the piccie is absolutely beautiful, just what I'm after.

If I try to chop the tusks out of a hog with the vanguard, I think I'll be left with something resembling a steak knife! Here's a piccie of the Fallkniven S1 after a similar task:

Worst part was that I needed this knife for defense immediately after, and it was like using a butter knife! I still love the size and shape of the S1, but need the strength of the INFI!

How long has it been since a BA was released? Are we closing in on the 3 year rotation thing, or does the current BATAC still qualify?

Three years or not, you are not going to see the BAIII come back just as before. Jerry changes the knife each generation. If you have your heart set on that version, prepare to pony up, IF you could find one for sale.

Good luck, and welcome to BladeForums and our corner of the world.

As I understand things the three year part only apples to the Fusion and Tac knives and I think it is that they may come back three times.

I also understand that the ASH-1 for example isn't a simple remake of the SH-1 because the SH-1 was never made in INFI.

So I would expect that you (and I) will never see a BA-III again.:grumpy:

At one time there was a lot of talk about a large GW and that would work well or you could say it would be a Mini BA-III. Another possible knife you could see is the BA-III blade with the SAR's handle.

Mmmmm wait   .... GARTH .... oh GARTH :D

No disputing the attractiveness of the BAIII, but for chopping bone, I think I'd prefer a bigger knife.

Check out this bone chopper: http://www.survival.com/siegle_blades.htm

However, I don't think Bill even makes this knife anymore. Seems like Gravelface was after him to make another. Not sure if he ever did.

Anybody here ever tried a Battle Mistress on an elk leg?

I sold my BA3 like a IDIOT. Stripped it and applied the DC finish to it and then sold it. :(

Did I metion that I'm an IDIOT.

I kept the SHBA though.

I swapped you that BA3 for a BA-E, are you an idiot ? ;):D

I like my ABA, DABA (do?) better than I did the BA3, the thickness didn't match the blade size for me. Maybe cause I got the DABA first.

While the BA3 was still around.

I'm not even quite sure how many Remington 870 "do it all" shotguns I now have. 5? 6? I'd really have to make a list to get the count right. (Okay, I'm at five 870s and an 1100.) And lately, I've been thinking that since I have a Remington 700 in .308 and a Winchester 70 in .30-06, I really owe it myself to get a Savage 110 in .270. :p

I get what you mean though. Unlike a number of guys here who specialize in one or more models, I tend mostly to buy two or three of a lot of different models. Lately, I've been thinking that a BA-E or an NO-E is just the ticket I need. :D

And jimmyjones just had to go and post a picture of one as I was typing this post.

Guyon- It must really suck that you have ALL those Busses, yet lack the very one you really, really "need".:D ss.

BTW: You didn't mention any Ruger 77's:confused:. Stainless, integral scope mounts, three position safety, claw extractor, controlled feed, heat treated action, optional banded ramp front sight with quick- change blade (I have a spare under the grip panel:thumbup:)? The 110 will be fine, but not the last one you'll "need".:D ss.

Whisk:

You might also want to look at the Fehrman Peace Maker, which seems to be a great little carry package and very versatile.

http://www.fehrmanknives.com/knives.htm

Fehrman's warranty is similar to Busse's, and they make very good quality knives.

Jason

I was going to order one of their knives until I took a good look through their web site. I figured I had enough guilt issues from 12 years of Catholic school, so I just stayed here and drank.

Hahaha

I don't take that kinda stuff too serious. I've seen a few knife sites where stuff like that is mentioned. I don't subscribe to those philosophies, but whatever, they still make good knives. It really isn't necessary in business though, so I can feel ya.

U_J...you make me laugh, man. Funny dood. Now don't get all Joe Pesci on me. :D
