The premise includes aliens with the technology to cross interstellar space and swipe my knives. The first question is "why". Perhaps a species that spends time and energy on developing and carrying personal EDC gear is a novelty for them. Maybe our diverse designs are hot items on the home world. I can think of cross-cultural human examples of this... Maybe their people had different needs or their technology took a different route. Whatever the case, an injection of alien technology could do wonders for the development of our gear.
