If united cutlery is POS what about Hibben?

No worries, sniperboy.....as you get older, you will acquire wisdom.
Well, that's what I was told.
I really did think it would happen before I started to lose my bloody mind.

Oh, well, maybe you will have better luck.

I am sorry I couldn't visit this thread, I am halfway across the world, assuming you guys are all posting from the states, and my brothers had messedup the computer so my modem is weirding up.

I don't know if I stepped on your toes before but if it's somethign personal then good. If not then chill.

I am sorry that I had to post an 'ignorant' post as you say. I, unlike you was not born with all the knife knowledge. I did do my homework and do past searche and most of the strings I found said that United cutlery was 'POS'.

I was rather confused since I thought Hibben was quite artistic, and I liked his throwers. I wanted to know more.

I, unlike you Mr. Phil, go to these forums to get more info not to flame people left and right just to do some intellectual cockwagging. The concept of getting more info must be beyond you, since that's not what you go here for.

Well, sniperboy
maybe, if you didn't (consistently) shoot from the hip, you might, occasionally, be on target.
I suspect you are quite young ( the big deal handle and the "edu" part of the email address is an indicator).....no worries. We were all young once. None of us was born with the knowledge. Most of us earned it over a period of many years.
And most of us are still learning.
Suggestion : stop trying to impress with "outrageous" comments. You come across as a "shock jock"....and not a really clever one.

Friendly advice.

And, if I offend.....will change my deodorant tomorrow.

I have a UC "Ken Onion/Colt Python" For the $ it is a great everyday beater. The handle is comfy, the recurve blade cuts well and I was amazed how sharp I can get it. While it aint a custom, it is what it is...a decent $30 blade.

sucks being a 'kid', but thanks for the back up advice Mr Edington.

Sorry for the post then. I really wanted to know what was up and next time I'll spend the extra time to make the subject heading more PC. forget this post then it's gonna fester into something bad soon prolly.

No worries, mate.
Nothing wrong with being a kid....would love to give it another shot.
Just relax and enjoy the company.
Oh, yeah...lose the "bounty hunter" bit on your i/d. Just a suggestion....definitely does not add to your cred.
And one more thing..Mr Edginton died in 1990.
I am his son, Brian.

Gil Hibben also makes great handmade knives.
Not fantasy stuff but hunters, bowies, folders, etc. He is really one of the pioneers and a master craftsman.
His son Wes in Alaska also makes great hunters.

Sniper.
I'm glad you showed your head, and the kind of man you are. I'm sorry I was so harsh I was trying to draw you out. When you throw around terms like POS against a company your may ruffle some feathers, that's fine even maybe fun. When you indicate a fine man like Mr. Hibben might be painted with the same brush, IMHO that's over the line. I'm here to learn also, and I can learn from anyone, even you. Here at the Forums, you have a voice that can carry a lot of weight to help or hurt. Gil Hibben's reputation is secure, I knew he didn't need my help to defend it. My point was be careful with your words, you never know whose reading it, and maybe who isn't here to defend themselves. If I was too hard on you I do apologise, my guess is that you can take it, stand up for yourself, and move on. I hope there's no hard feelings, and that we can put this behind us.

Call me Phil Mr. Sniper

Well I must say that i am relieved Phil. I did not post this to start a flame and i am glad you were not too.

cool then. I never liked flame wars. it disturbs me. I forgot how dangerous being un politically correct it is on public forums.

Well I guess out of all of this I sort of got my answer to my original question thanks again sirs... and nah I like 'sniperboy' for personal reasons.

I think I'll be young and immature for a little while longer.

Dang. I never get to have any fun...

Well, I have never owned a United brand knife. I am sure that they make some decent using knives in their price range, but the fantasy pieces? If that is you cup of tea then fine, enjoy; This is a product for a specific market. but, come on guys, there is such a thing as taste and sophistication, both in working knives and "art" knives. I would enjoy a Monet print too, but not a Big Eyed Puppy and Kitty print. I am sure that the originals from Gil are finely made and rise above the juvenile.

Some of the replies to his post hint that Hibben United Cutlery knives are not collectable and will not hold their value. This may be true, however, if anyone has any early Hibben UC stuff such as a Silver Shadow, Double Shadow or Highlander Bowie, I would gladly take them off your hands.

Collectors are sometimes a strange lot and what is defined as collectible can be quite unpredictible. If one person wants it enough to pay for it, then it is collectible. There's a thread going on right now debating the value of a certain eBay auction. Offered in this auction: one complete, new-in-box set of Original Ginsu Kitchen Knives. Are these great knives? Probably not. Are they a valuable collectible? Maybe.

U Cutlery mostly produces POS knives, for sure. Flea market junk. Every so often I have seen some that aren't too lame, though, but those are few and far between with that crew.

Man-I think you guys were kinda rough on the sniperboy.

Ginsu knives as a collectible? I've seen everything now!

sniperboy,
It's rough being a kid. I have to tell you being old, ain't no walk in the park either, but it sure beats the alternative. Seems like some of our fellow Members are sorry they missed our little "fire fight." I for one am glad it's over. Just for the record I don't own a UC piece. I've seen Gil Hibben a few times at shows, and met him once, a very charming man. I'm sure you two would get along. I just found out a few months ago that Gil made anythinf except for Rambo's and Fantasy knives. His tradional style knives are more what I'm looking for, and I think well priced, considering his wonderful reputation as a Custom maker.

I think that many United Cutlery knives are designed as collectables. One of the motto's on a UC box is "The Future of Knife Collecting". This is no doubt an over statement, but in my opinion, UC has done much to spark an interest in collecting knives. By only releasing a limited amount of certain models, they create a demand for those knives. While many of those limited editions still run into the thousands of copies, after the run is over and they quit making that item, the demand for that model seems to go up.

As an example, I bought a Siver Shadow II several years ago for $19.95 when Smoky Mountain Knife Works was unloading them. That knife goes for over $100 on Ebay. If I would have known that back then, I would have bought two.

All right; this seems to be the group for which I've been looking!

No, not for a flame war, thank you very much.

But I happen to have a pre UC custom Gil Hibben short sword, and need to know its value. I posted for help on another thread and have received no info. Help, please.

Rats.

Everytime I think the learning curve is leveling out, I get tripped up. Up till Redleg's post I'd never heard of Frost. My dealer doesn't carry it and I'd never seen it.

Did a hotbot search and got buried with hits - the stuff is everywhere. I presume from the tone of the post I should stay clear - correct?

I rather like to be wrong - some of the designs looked intriguing but that layered rainbow handle didn't do anything for me.

TIA

Actually the Hibben Silver Shadow and the CS tanto was the first knife I fell in love with. So it really goes for that much?? I should check my local knife store.. I htnk they have one =)
