Hey Don, I just wanted to comment on a few things you mentioned -
The people who owned the ideas, have long since vanished. There is very little that is new under the sun, in fact, we are pursuing the 'old' (skills) generally. Every survival instructor is just rehashing things that he/she learned from others along the way, for the most part, although he or she might add their own takes on it..
Actually, this applies to the whole spectrum of knowledge/education, not just survival techniques/equipment.
When I wrote, "Don't we all do this and who owns the ideas?" it was really a rhetorical question.
My whole point in writing that was to emphasize the point you came back with. I agree with you.
I took a quick look in his book where he dealt with SAK's and he doesn't mention anything like that, that I could see, and, coupled with my own distrust of journalists................
It was from a newspaper article on one of his classes, I have no idea what is in his book. I also distrust journalists and said as much when it came to something else in the article.
Here is a link to the article: http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/08/01/travel/escapes/01survival.html
Doesn't that make an "expert" a mythical character? What would you say to somebody that says he has nothing left to learn?
Some people use the word "expert" as a weapon to silence the opinions of others. What happens when two "experts" vehemently disagree with each other? I mean, they're both experts...
I don't think it makes an "expert" a "mythical character," I think it simply means the title of "expert" has been so whored out is meaningless now. My comparison with military marksmanship qualifications, I think, is clear. If you Q as an "Expert" two or three times and then you drop one shot too many on a following Qualification, they take the title from you. But does that really mean you are no longer operating on an "expert level" with a rifle?
To sum up my position, I don't care where the information comes from, short of a Jeffery Dahlmer cook book, I'll take it.
Bwah!
