If you buy a new knife, Would the blade be 3" or 3 1/2"?

I like 3.25" & 3.5"

The longest I can deal with for a folder would be 3.625",like the large Sebenza.Like some of the others said,if I needed anything longer than that,I'd grab a fixed blade.

If I had to choose between the two,It'd be 3.5"

Thanks for asking AG:thumbup:

how about 3 5/8 closed with 3" spear lock back barlow?

AG - from your description, the knife you have designed appears to be single-bladed. My usual preference for slipjoints is for <3 1/2" overall. Bigger than that tends to feel bulky in your pocket. At around 3 - 3 1/4", I can deal with the added thickness of 2 blades, but larger than that I prefer a more slender single blade. As much as I carry a knife, I've never had a use for more than one blade at a time. (City dude, I know)

A Case Mini-copperlock pattern is comparable in size to your Barlow, and it's one of my favorite patterns to carry. And I love love love natural materials like bone, stag, antler, & horn. Call me weak.

I still like ~ 3 1/2" blades for my more "tactical-ish" knives like the Sebenza, Acies, or an Endura.

This IS a great discussion. Thank you for asking.

I use skinning deer as my barometer, in truth that is the largeist task most here an elsewhere are going to undertake with a knife, I have cleaned deer and all kinds of game and not much works better than a 3 inch blade, anything bigger is cumbersome. Moreover if your going to do any task that actually requires says a larger blade, well that is why they make fixed blade knives.

What I think would help is that if a "mini version" or 3 inch knife is made, don't downsize any of the other dimensions other than length. Leave the handles and blades the same thickness as the larger model and also leave the blades and handles as wide.

Dallas,
You are correct, this is a wonderful discussion and it is I who must thank you and everyone else involved for your input and the help you have been,

Thanks for asking. I've found after 55+ years of carrying knives that I like & use mostly 3" bladed folders and 3.5"-4" bladed FBs.

Have always looked for the longer blades and a few times when I was hunting ended up using a folder that I had in my pocket because I left the bigger ones in the truck but it was usually at least a 3". The other side of that is I find myself carrying the shorter (under 3.5) more of the time and I have a number of each. Like the looks and feel of the longer blades but my practical side carrys the 3 inchers or smaller.

Same here, I like the 3.5" but mostly carry the 3" for practical convenience, legality, invisibility. Who would have thought that that half inch would make such a difference in what we carry?

If 3-3.5 is an ideal blade, then why don't you see more blade
at 3.25. This seems to be right in the middle ( the sweet spot) for me.
I hope I'm not alone? 3.25!!!!

I've never opened my Mini Grip to use it and felt that the blade was too short. 3" is fine for me. Plus, 3.5" is more of a hassle for me (female) to carry without having to drop it into a bag.

3.5" to 3.75" for me, anything smaller should be a slippie, anything larger should be a fixed blade. Then again, I have big paws. Saying that, three of my favorite folders are my small micarta Sebenza, Benchmade 710 and Spyderco Military.

I'm definitely a 3 inch or shorter kind of guy. I have some 3- 4 inch blade knives but they are simply too big to ride comfortably in my pocket.

Rarely to almost never have I run into needing a blade larger than 3 inch.

3.5" is ideal to me because of it's ability to serve as an EDC and has just enough length to be useful for tactical purposes.

I am still figuring out my preferences but I seem to gravitate towards three inches. Though 3.5 is still acceptable.

My preference is 3" or less. If I'm carrying it in my pocket, which I do everyday at work,
3.5" closed is the max I'm comfortable with.

I think you should make a 'mini' acies around the 3" range.

You would sell millions.

=)

Plus 3" is legal almost everywhere you go.
