how about 3 5/8 closed with 3" spear lock back barlow?
A lockback barlow, that would be interesting. Carbon steel blade?
I use skinning deer as my barometer, in truth that is the largeist task most here an elsewhere are going to undertake with a knife, I have cleaned deer and all kinds of game and not much works better than a 3 inch blade, anything bigger is cumbersome. Moreover if your going to do any task that actually requires says a larger blade, well that is why they make fixed blade knives.
What I think would help is that if a "mini version" or 3 inch knife is made, don't downsize any of the other dimensions other than length. Leave the handles and blades the same thickness as the larger model and also leave the blades and handles as wide.
AG - from your description, the knife you have designed appears to be single-bladed. My usual preference for slipjoints is for <3 1/2" overall. Bigger than that tends to feel bulky in your pocket. At around 3 - 3 1/4", I can deal with the added thickness of 2 blades, but larger than that I prefer a more slender single blade. As much as I carry a knife, I've never had a use for more than one blade at a time. (City dude, I know)
A Case Mini-copperlock pattern is comparable in size to your Barlow, and it's one of my favorite patterns to carry. And I love love love natural materials like bone, stag, antler, & horn. Call me weak.
I still like ~ 3 1/2" blades for my more "tactical-ish" knives like the Sebenza, Acies, or an Endura.
This IS a great discussion. Thank you for asking.
Have always looked for the longer blades and a few times when I was hunting ended up using a folder that I had in my pocket because I left the bigger ones in the truck but it was usually at least a 3". The other side of that is I find myself carrying the shorter (under 3.5) more of the time and I have a number of each. Like the looks and feel of the longer blades but my practical side carrys the 3 inchers or smaller.
