If you can only have one...

I posted earlier that the large stockman is my one and only (if necessary), but lately I've been carrying the Bayou Trapper sowbelly and it could give the large stockman a run for the money. Four inches closed, very ergonomic frame and a wonderful set of blades to cover any need. One of these in M390 stainless and gnarly ram's horn might be THE ONE.

As much as I love 4 - 4 1/4" stockman and strongly dislike the case sowbelly. I have to confess that the Bayou Trapper has been winning me over, I honestly only picked one up out of FOMO but now I am glad I did.

Something a long the lines of a 127UH, 125OT or modified Buck 317 to be a single blade. With anyone of these, I could handle any normal chores plus process any game or domestic food animal.

It's been a little over two years since I first answered the question posed in this thread. The only thing that has changed for me since then is, I am now even more certain about my choice.
If I can only have one pattern for life, it would be the Sportsman. Just too versatile to choose anything else.
In my last post in this thread I selected the Farmer to represent the pattern. Today it's the Compact shown below but the question is about which pattern so I'd most likely have several of the same pattern. Such as a Huntsman, Spartan, Cadet, Pioneer, Bushcrafter, Trekker, etc.
Choosing the Sportsman pattern makes virtually all pocket tools available to me.

SAK should put an ink pen on every cellidor knife. Except maybe the classic sizes ones. I've used the one in my Compact a few times when nothing else was available. They work very well.

My perfect knife hasn’t been made yet. I don’t know what it is, but I sure am eager to try out new patterns to find out if one of them is it.

In reality I think what I want is a “luxury” penknife… the GEC White Owl comes so close. Then I switch it up with a different pattern and eventually circle back. Maybe a clip point whittler on the #68 frame with half stops on the secondaries and abalone or mother of pearl covers? Yeah that would be sweet.

But I’m sure if I had one I’d eventually get tired of it grab a #73 again, or a swayback jack, or a TC Barlow.

My life experiences have taught me that what we need and what we want are vastly different concepts. A single mora knife is all I could ever need out of a knife. It can process food in the kitchen as well as 100 miles deep in the backcountry. It can process wood, help knoctch lumper, dig out splinters, and even help me shave if I really needed it. Sure, there are cooler, stronger, even more attractive knives out there, but at the end of the day all I really need is a mora, a leather belt to strop, a two sided sharpening stone, and some mineral oil.

I agree, and a straight pin too. So summing up "plus" covers for all!

Gec 35 Cattle knife but switch the spey blade for a caplifter with the flathead screwdriver on top and I would be good.

"for the rest of your life " believe I'd have to top myself o_O

I think it would have to be French, but then, can I have one from US, Italy, Germany, just one from each country ;)

Alright, France and single blade but Laguiole, Tonneau, Aurillac, Pradel, Gouttière ? Just can't say...I'd miss the American multi blade Stockman mind. Fixed too... AAaaaaghhh!
