If you could change the steel on a becker what would it be?

I feel like I've been waiting for this thread forever and didn't even know it.

Personally, I'm bummed that I missed out on the 7's in S30V and would jump at the chance if they offer it again.

I love the BK24 in D2 and would like to see that in a few other models. S30V, 3V, Elmax, Cruwear.... You name it, I'll buy it.

I'm certainly not dissing 1095, it's good stuff and I kinda think of it as "ole faithful" but it doesn't mean I wouldn't jump at the chance to own a couple other options too.

It would be awesome if they rereleased the new bk10 with a D2 option!

The BK-9 in SR-101 would be sweet. A BK-16 that has laminated VG-10 like the Fallkies would be awesome. Both I would buy.

uh the BK11 SanMai Hitachi [Blue?] Steel and the BK14 were years apart as far as i recall

the BK24 in D2 is VERY NICE-AH... pretty much stainless. meat does not seem to affect it.

some of you will also recall, in the distant past, they (being the Pre-Camillus and older makes of Beckers) have used a variety of other steels. some good, some great. most more than adequate.

1095 with Master Toooj at the helm? Bulletproof.

if i didn't have a full-time job fixing webpages (well, these days, writing brilliant new javascript stuff), i'd sit down and try to debug why this forum has so many double taps, when no other forum does.

BK-10 in CPM 3v or M4 FTW!!!
Also the Patrol Machete in 52100 would be awesome!

And all the tweeners in D2!

That is all....

I don't own any knives made of the high-end stuff, so I don't know how great S30V or INFI steel are relative to the 1095.

I do, however, think a 16 with something nice and corrosion resistant would be great, even something semi-stainless like D2.

I would definitely be down to buy something in one of the super steels, though.

I would buy a bk16 in s30v with brown micarta in a heart beat. My wife would skin me alive with it but it would be done with one sweet knife.

Patrick look at both steel properties

52100 http://zknives.com/knives/steels/52100.shtml
Formerly a ball-bearing steel, and as such previously only used by forgers, it's available in bar stock now. It is similar to 5160 (though it has around 1% carbon vs. 5160 ~.60%), but holds an edge better. It is less tough than 5160. It is used often for hunting knives and other knives where the user is willing to trade off a little of 5160's toughness for better wear resistance. However, with the continued improvement of 52100 heat treat, this steel is starting to show up in larger knives and showing excellent toughness. A modified 52100 under the SR-101 name is being used by Jerry Busse in his Swamp Rat knives. German equivalent 1.3505 is discontinued.

Carbon 0.98 - 1.1
Chromium 1.3 - 1.6
Iron Balance
Manganese 0.25 - 0.45
Phosphorus 0.025 max
Silicon 0.15 - 0.35
Sulphur 0.025 max

Then theres the Becker that use the 1095 Cro-Van(ka bar name), 170-6 By steel makers and 50100-b elsewere http://zknives.com/knives/steels/0170-6c.shtml
- A good chrome-vanadium steel, similar to O1 steel, less expensive. Blackjack knives used it, and Carbon V is a Cold Steel re-brand for it. The steel was still made for Camillus, just for Cold Steel it was called Carbon V.

Carbon 0.95
Chrome 0.45 0.48
Vanadium 0.19
Niquel 0.3
Manganese 0.4
Si 0.46
Cu 0.46

So yeah Im more of the 1095 cro van line...

Bladite it was 2 years apart, the especulation come hard has nails and didn't give the sam-mai to shine...

52100 is awesome stuff. lots of steels suggested here are great, but that would add onto the cost of knife. and 1095 that's used is pretty much a nice tough cheap steel.

another knife simple carbon steel that would be pretty sweet is O1.

=D

i'd rather have s35vn over s30v. easier to sharpen, an improved version overall of s30v.

I'd pay a bit extra for a limited edition run in a tool steel like O1, D2, or A2. For stainless options I'd be into 440C other mid-grade steels that wouldn't jack the price up too much.

I wonder if there'd be any advantage of a pure 1095 steel, rather than the Cro-Van stuff? Given the number of people who strip and patina their Beckers, might 1095 give a better patina? Would 1075 / 1085 not hold an edge as well?
