I'd pay a bit extra for a limited edition run in a tool steel like O1, D2, or A2. For stainless options I'd be into 440C other mid-grade steels that wouldn't jack the price up too much.
I wonder if there'd be any advantage of a pure 1095 steel, rather than the Cro-Van stuff? Given the number of people who strip and patina their Beckers, might 1095 give a better patina? Would 1075 / 1085 not hold an edge as well?
There is little to no difference between 1095 and 1095crovan given the heat treat is done right on them both. I know 1084 is just as good as 1095 is and its easier to heat treat, this is why you see 1084 used by a lot of custom makers that and you can forge the heck out of 1084. 1075 from my experience doesnt hold its edge as long but at the same time seems to be an overall tougher steel. To me 1075 bridges the gap between 5160 and 1095, again this is from my own personal uses nothing at all scientific about it.
