If You Could Design Your Own Spyderco

I checked out your site. I see you're a Photoshop Wizard with too much time on your hands. ;)

What do you do; design knives for fun and hope Spyderco buys one of your ideas someday?

Not that much time, unfortunately :( I have several new concepts that still wait to be finished. But it's fun. The people at Spyderco are very kind and supportive. They taught me a lot and generously shared their knowledge with me. My work is just a homble hommage to Sal Glesser and Co. :)

Here is another idea for a Spydie design I would like to see. A cross between the Dodo and Kerambit. It seems like you could re-engineer the dodo handle to create a ring, narrow the overall handle width towards the center and make the blade a little larger. Keep the ball detent lock and presto, super death utility keramdo!

I would like to see a fixed blade kerambit that costs bout $100. Blade of about 3", g-10 hadles.

1) I would make a flat ground chinook II, preferably with a moran edge.

2) I would also:

2a) Wave the blade; or,

2b) put an abbreviated serrated ramp on it to facilitate waving/kinetic openings and thumb locks; and,

3) include an indexing hole

Here's mine.
1. New Dyad-like EDC.
2. FRN to keep it low cost. G10 if it's not too expensive.
3. 2.5 or 3" size blades.
4. One blade in the shape of the CalypsoJr. Flat-ground.
5. Opposite blade is a full spyderedge mini-hawkbill.
6. VG10 steel. (or new ZDP steel if it passes the test)
7. Lock or non-locking slipjoint like the UK.

You have the caly-drop blade for fine cuts and the hawk for the tougher jobs.

I would like to see a real Mini-Military.

This means: Navigator size, better steel (VG10 or S30V) and liner lock.

The handles should be thick G10, giving a more positive grip than the Dragonfly.

The Bladetech Mouse II is almost there, but a real Mini-Military should have a blade shape with less belly (more like the Dragonfly, and flat ground of course). Also, it should be liner lock (for ease of manipulation and to remove vertical blade play which is annoying with lockbacks). Don't tell me it can't be done in such a small knife, I have an Al Mar SLB and it works great.

Tell you what, the old G-10 Police PE was about as close to perfect as I have seen yet. I can only think of a few minor changes that could make it better.

Update the steel with VG-10, ATS-34 or S30v. Give it dual steel liners. Maybe make it a frame lock or liner lock but that is not needed. In fact, if Spyderco would actually make this model again, it would probably have all the improvments it would ever need. That full flat gound blade was great. The older Spydercos with G-10 seemed to be some of their best work ever.

Most of my favorite models are the older G-10 knives. The Centofate II, the G-10 Police, and the Para are some of the best ones. The Para needs a little work but I am sure the Para II will be much better.

Flat-grind SS Police, with finger grooves a la Navigator 2, bead-blasted overall for less reflection and better grip.

I love the handle shapes of the Chinook 2 and the Manix, but I think the G-10 scales are just too thick for EDC.

Slightly larger Police--4 1/2"-5" blade--S30V, four way deep carry clip with integral lanyard hole, "wave" opener, G10 handles, DLC on all metal parts. And no "police" lettering!

A G10 Police with dual steel liners and a 5" blade, S30V or VG 10. Add a strong tip and a flat-grind and this would be the perfect knife for me.

To improve sales, the lettering on one side should say 'Police' and on the other side 'And Thieves'. This would adress a much larger part of the population.:D

I won't insist on the lettering if Spyderco makes it a 5,5" blade...

Lum Folder w/ G-10, any good steel.
Jens Anso framelock folder
Kevin Wilkins framelock folder
Loveless fixed Boot/Fighter.

The ultimate Spyder would definately be a Military, Ti framelock on one side, Carbon Fiber or black G10 on the other, tip down, with a D2 satin finish, sterile, plainedge blade.

I'd like a UK Pen Knife but with jigged bone scales and either just one bolster, no bolsters or very tiny bolsters to show off the bone.

I would also like to see a small fixed blade with a good carbon steel or M2 designed primarily for EDC, not MBC... And run it as hard as possible.

A larger version of the Harpy, carried tip down, with G-10 handle.

More extra-large sized folders (5" blade) -- perhaps a Spanish Bowie or traditional navaja style blade, with a thumbhole extension like on the discontinued Jot Singh Khalasa.

A non-utillitarian stiletto.

I would very much like to have a double linered G10 Rookie in VG10 or ATS55 fully serrated.

Preferably the hole slightly larger and fully above the handle.

This would be a perfect little big knife for me.

Mine would be the C54 Calypso with ZDP189 core San Mai and silver CF handle.
But I am pretty happy with the C54BMP "standart" version ;)

Plain edge rescue jr with a a reverse-tanto blade and a wave. Kind of a smaller, poor-man's yojimbo.
