If you could do it all over again...

Though it is a nice knife, the ZT 560 is not even near his specified price range.
I would suggest a Spyderco Military. Mine has been well tested over the past few years and only seems to get better with time. The s30v handles itself so well that my CF/M390 Military just sits in a drawer.

A ZT0560 and a delica 4 ffg are all I need I've found. cost me a couple grand to find that out. If I were you I'd get a Delica 4 and save the $100.

oh and get a fully serrated spyderco ladybug for your keychain.

If I was getting rid of all of my $150 and below knives, I think the last one to go would be my BM 581 Barrage, M-390 steel, great looks, excellent assist mechanism, very well rounded. I love my Kershaws too, but the Barrage is really a step above all but the best, I prefer it above the rest of my Benchmades as well. I have a ZT 0550, but that one is above the price point you listed, and in another class.

I also would skip the combo edge and go for a plain edge. That said, choice 1 would be a Benchmade 710. Choice 2 would be a Spyderco Military. Both about 4" blades and both totally sweet knives that function great and look cool.

Good luck in your decision

So, if you could go back and re-buy your first knife, what would you buy?

I think I lucked out since if I could go back and re-buy my first "real" knife, I would choose the same one I got in the first place, which was a Benchmade 940.

Lots of good info here. My head is spinning. I decided to buy two knives this week since I apparently will be buying multiple ones anyway :) (that's how it works w/ everything else!).

I satisfied my urge to "PULL THE DAMN TRIGGER NOW!" by grabbing a Delica 4 (Amazon Prime plus $3.99 means I can have it TOMORROW) for starters while I take my time and pick out one more from the great suggestions I have gotten so far.

Thank you everyone!

If I were buying now, I would still buy a Benchmade AFCK... except they don't make them except for "special" runs any more. Why they don't I will NEVER know. Barring that, I'd pick up a Spyderco Caly 3.5 AND go ahead and get yourself a Sharpmaker if you don't already have sharpening stuff.

just buy a spyderco military. it is the perfect working mans knife.its not classy and pretty like a sebenza but it is probably the best performing folder i have ever used

Another vote for the benchmade 710. That was my first "real" EDC knife very solid and compact for its size. The only issue that most have with it is the blade steel and recurve, good thing benchmade offers their lifesharp program. I never had to use it I am light user and the edge of the 710 after a year was still pretty damn sharp. I had since sold it and jumped on the Emerson bandwagon but I sure do miss that axis lock.

great choice, cannot go wrong with a delica 4. which color? I have a black saber grind and a green ffg.

I notice you haven't mentioned locks.
The Delica is a back lock. For your second knife, Get something different, just so you learn from the experience.
I find myself drifting back to slipjoints (no lock). They look different, & cut well. check out GEC & Queen.
In some jurisdictions, they are more acceptable, if that is an issue.

Actually went wild with FFG Orange. I figure my next one will most certainly be black, so grab a crazy color since its available and this one will more than likely end up in my motorcycle tailbag after a while.

Small: Delica, Benchmade 940, Mini Griptilian
Medium : Paramilitary 2, Griptilian, Any ZT
Large : BM Bedlam, BM Adamas, Military, Any ZT

Some of my favorite knives listed here. Quality materials, quality production, satisfying and effective aesthetic and function.

Paramilitary 2 is my all-time favorite. Can spend what you want to get it in plain or blade super-steels. Many colors available also.
Outstanding lock system; so easy to open/close.
