If you could do it all over again...

I'd get three knives: a Victorinox Rambler for my keys, a full-sized alox SAK (probably the Vic Farmer) and a Spyderco Sage 1. Pretty sure all three could be had for around $150ish...

A few thoughts.... the "cool" factor has me rethinking my choices. But I'll give you my opinion anyway.

Good EDC for cutting... choose the Vic SAK that you like.
Good general purpose knives.... Spyderco Delica
Great slip joint... choose a Great Eastern Cutlery knife like a Trapper or Stockman pattern.
Something more cool... I guess the Spyderco Para Military II.
A quick pocket friendly flipper.... SOG Twitch II or Twitch XL

I bought something the other day that I never believed I would consider buying... a micro utility knife (Lowe's brand). I often have the need to do some very detailed cutting when I am fishing and this little thing dissapperars in my pocket and with the replaceable blades, I'll have a razor sharp knife for little things that clippers or a regular knife stuggles at accomplishing.

Another vote for Spyderco Paramilitary 2, love everything about it from the material used, to size and design. I would skip the combo edge though

I went through about a hundred pages from the EDC thread this morning. Fun stuff. Saw a lot of stuff I like and learned a lot.

Tried to give back a bit by ordering the 2012 BladeForums Knife as well!

Probably a SAK, Opinel and Mora... And hope I don't get a knife addiction so I can save a lot of money ;)

Wow... So I dropped $260 on 3 knives in the past 30 hours. Plus the Pre-Order on the 2012 BladeForums Knife.

I am betting I will get a real good idea of what I like and dislike over the next week :) .

Thanks everyone for the input. Time to chill....................................

sounds like you're already in trouble...It doesn't stop from here. Dont worry though, you're not the only one. I spent nearly $1000 the first month I really got into it....

Care to say what you picked up? Make sure you're getting some good sharpening equipment to go with the knives. There's nothing worse than a dull knife and nothing better than a shockingly sharp one.

I figured it'd be more fun to post as they arrive :).

I will definitely snag a sharpener sooner than later.

Went through the same thing when I decided I liked watches more than just to tell the time. I bought quite a few entry (or just above entry) level pieces then slowly consolidated after finding what I liked.

I think I asked the right questions up front here to get a bit of a head start and hopefully have less wasted $ in my wake.

Regardless, any lost funds will be chalked up to educational and entertainment value!!

I would find the knife that you want and stick to your damn guns until you get it. Save up, don't get tempted to settle for anything less. Once you have enough money for one of them, but it and if it really is everything you wanted and hoped for -- your personal perfect EDC -- buy another one as a safequeen, spare or gift for your future children.

Also, never trade said favorite knife.

Emerson mini CQC-15

Also, a small, quality fixed blade is extremely handy and will probably be one of your most used go-to knives.

So I have had a few deliveries this week. Really dove in to see what it is that I want to accomplish here.

Learning a lot. Thanks for the input folks. Here's a few quick phone pics.

The CRKT itch had to be scratched as it was a sale on Dvor that made me even think about buying a knife to begin with when I saw the desert tan CRKT.

People rave about the ZT knives, and in the few hours I have had it, I can see why. The product is outstanding. I can't wait to test out the 5's.

I'm going to throw out a few more knives you may want to look at. When I started buying knives it was in the mid-70's and the first I bought was a Buck 110, and a 112. These were the day's before pocket clips and thumb studs! At the time I felt that these were t he best production knives going. In the early 80's I was reading a G&A magazine and saw an ad for a Cold Steel Tanto, so that was my next. From there I found out about BM's forerunner, PCC, and got a couple of the Model 30's(?), they had solid stainless handles with the pins all flush, and they were very nice and ended up convincing me to pick up a custom PCC in the 4.0" X 3/16" blade in a Imalda High Hollow grind, a slicing machine it was!! The late 80's and 90's saw MT's, more BM's, and I found out about customs. The 2000's up to now has seen more of the same, though internet access really opened up the choices!

So as a do over, I don't think I would change a thing. I always wanted the largest folder I could find and I still look for that. If I was starting today and had done research, I would still look for the largest/overbuilt folder's and would check out the BM 275 Adamas, and the ZT0200, in the production knives. Of course I have those two already, but if starting fresh I do think that I would be drawn right to these. There are plenty other's at the $150 and under, along with the $150 and up.

Happy hunting, welcome to BF, and it looks like you have gotten a good start!

The BM Adamas is actually on my short list. It seems to get some mixed reviews, so I wasn't sure. I love the look of it.

If I had to go back and re-buy the first knife I bought, I'd buy the exact same one I did then: Kershaw Cyclone. I've regretted a fair few knife purchases, but I've never had cause to regret buying that one.
