If you could only carry one.

If I could only carry one specific pattern I would want that pattern to be one with the most utility. Levin's 4th edition calls a pocket knife with multi use blades a Sportsman pattern. We call them a SAK. I would select a SAK because they are IMO the pocket knife pattern that comes closest to do-it-all utility.

What a grisly scenario :eek::D

Probably a very sharp knife to open my veins ;)

Er, er dunno...something with a Spear blade in it....something with three blades, no wait something double ended yes, no I like that one more...

Well alright, the forum Knife 2018:) and I could do with a back-up example if there's any around :D

This is a harder question to answer than I originally thought. My first thought, and ultimately my answer, is a medium stockman.
As some others have said, a SAK would be a better choice for practicality. In that case I'd probably choose a pioneer or farmer, even though I don't currently own either one. The tool set of either of those seems to be most useful for me.
One of the great things about traditionals is the number of different patterns. I'm still just getting back into traditional knives, so there's a few patterns that I really want to try.

I always carry four or three.
What really bad thing happened that I can only carry one?

Keeping that ancient, prehistoric from before the Neanderthals adage that's been passed down to us: "No single blade profile is ideal for all tasks" in mind, I guess a large 4.25 to 4.625 inch closed stockman in my pocket, and a SAK "Signature" for the pen, toothpick, scissors, and hook sharpener, on my key ring. (The blade might work if converting a crow, or pigeon/flying rat or other fowl feather to a dip pen?)

I'll be honest. I won't remove the Mora Number 1 and Cold Steel FINN BEAR/Puukko, and scout/camp/G.I. Utility Knife/Demo Knife, or/and any other knife/knives from my rollator's tote/shopping bags. If anything, I'd probably add a few, like a Marlin Spike, since it must be the SHTF, making working with rope again likely, and my dedicated "patch knife" straight razor for loading the muzzleloaders.

Case medium stockman. Not my favourite knife, as I prefer Laguioles, Opinels, and trappers, but those work better as belt sheath knives. If I could only carry one, I would like one that I could drop in my pocket and hardly notice. The medium stockman is an ideal pocket knife. I have one in my left front pocket now, and a trapper on a belt sheath. I am glad I am not limited to one knife. But if I were....

A very valid point I feel. If it's too big to carry without drawbacks/limitations then it's not to be considered. Amber Bone is always worthwhile too

However, in a knife forum, the concept of only having one knife is rather like taking up abattoir work as a vegan ;):D

This is one of those weird questions because it is both unrealistic, and requires you to pick a compromise that you might not actually normally choose otherwise.

If I could truly only carry one pocket-tool with a blade on it, then it would be a Victorinox Alox Electrician. Gives me a curved and straight blade, screwdriver, and punch, all in one tool. In reality I normally carry an Alox Cadet.

If we are limiting it to a single knife *pattern* then I go with "Stockman" which gives me a broad range of sizes and blade options.

If it is a single specific knife (allowing a multi-tool of some sort as well), then it would be a Case 6347 Stockman.

Just one? That's easy. Much easier than choosing a Top 5 or Five Best Looking. In this case, there isn't any real choice. I'd keep and use the knife I treasure above all others.

It's not my favorite knife, nor is it my best. But this knife was given to me by my little girl for Father's Day several years ago. It's the only one I couldn't part with.
