If you could only have one tough knife...

I see two questions here and I'm not sure which to answer . . . so I'm going to answer both. :)

1) Which folder and which fixed blade would I chose for hard use if I could only have one, not both?

Folder: Camillus CUDA Maxx Bowie

Fixed: Bob Dozier Texas #6
5-1/2" swedged spearpoint in D2

Both blades are just over 5" long, which is my best size compromise for a do-everything knife. I slightly prefer the #6's swedged spearpoint to the Maxx's clip-point, but both provide a broad curving edge and point that penetrates well. Both knives are very functional as well as tough.

2) which folder and fixed blade combination would I chose for hard use as a pair?

Folder: Darrel Ralph Madd Maxx
4" spearpoint recurve in Talonite

Fixed: Camillus OVB Fisk Southwest Bowie

For a combination I'll take one relatively small blade and one large one. My Talonite Maxx is a great utility blade and is immune to almost any environment. The Fisk Southwest is huge, tough, and versatile, but still lightweight. Between the two they should handle anything from fine work to chopping.

I agree. I've seen, maybe, 5% negative posts, as compared to 95% positive posts, on Greco folders. Most people posting the negative simply don't like the relatively hard action and the fact that they are not quite so refined as some of the other strong folders. As soon as I save my pennies, I'm going to do a Greco folder.

If you want the absolute toughest out there, it's a no brainer:
Fixed- Busse Steel Heart
Folder- Strider

Randall Stainless #14
Large Sebenza.

(Though I would give up the Sebenza for a SAK Soldier as long as I had the 14)

For fixed blade it would be my newly redressed Busse Battle Mistress.
My folder choice would by my Strider GB.
Both of these blades have served me well and I doubt I could destroy either of them.

Easy, for a fixed blade my Ed Fowler "Pronghorn"
for a folder my Carson M4 in Stellite & Stag.

Fixed: Becker Bk9 with plenty of goodies in sheath pouch

Folder: Buck strider mini spearpoint.

1. A fixed blade that is more tough than it needs to be is the Fallkniven S1. I recently got one of these. Don't get the cordura sheath, it's cheeze. Get the leather or kydex sheath.

2. The toughest folder I can think of is the Sebenza. Only complaint about the knife is that the titanium scratches very easy.

The Sere 2000 is not as tough but it's pretty good.

3. I'd like to add a third smaller knife for good luck! It's not what I would consider tough, but I use it a lot, my Victorinox Soldier.

Time for a new thread...The 3 knife combo, Small, medium and kick-ass large.

Cheers,
Collector

Fixed: Anything by Becker.

Folder: Spyderco Endura II (slim and still rather carryable), or CRKT Prowler (heavy as heck).

collecter,
That is a good idea. It is very Obvious that there is no one knife to handle every need. So i strongly agree with you here. Need a large strong fixed blade for hack and slash. A folder for minor cutting work. And of coz a multitool.
My set for camping include an Axe, fixed blade and a multitool.

For me this is a given. I ALWAYS have my Victorinox Tinker, no matter what else I happen to be carrying.
