If you could only take one item on a wilderness adventure, what would it be?

I think everyone has missed the point, including the one who originally posed the question. ONE thing. I would want to bring my knowledge and will to survive with my mind and body in good functional shape. I reason these are inextricably intertwined and thus count them as one if it was what I “could” or “would” bring. Obviously, sometimes when one is in a survival situation, one may be in less than perfect shape because of the circumstances that left the person in the situation-a crash, canoe overturning without equipment being lashed, a fall, etc. Additionally, since the poster did not specify environment this is really the only answer. (I typed this earlier, but had to leave. Since then Takao alluded to this, saying “common sense....”

The rest, as certain posters have pointed out might vary by environment, and how well clothed one is for that environment, but ignoring extremes for the moment here would be the rest of my answer.*

If I could bring two things, I would add my Leatherman Wave, or other good multitool, or Rucksack SAK (Swiss Army Knife). I could be convinced to switch this to a Busse Battle Mistress. It would be more comforting and fun, but I do not know enough to decide which would be best.
The multitool would be useful in manipulating various found objects/parts of clothing into useful objects. Any I would ever have would have a saw. Now of course those Swiss Champ advocates would have a magnifying glass (Is it good enough to start a fire?)
The BBM would be more indestructible and perhaps faster at certain necessary tasks.

If I could bring three things, I would add a metal match. Of course this is really unfair to make me add this to a list, because I always have one on me, that I got from the Hoods. It is attached to my key chain. (If anyone, that doesn’t already know how, wants to know, I would be happy to explain the method I used....Of course one could buy one designed with this in mind, but .....).

If I could bring four things it would probably be some type of instant shelter such as a few heavy duty trash bags (say 3 or 4 would still be less than one box
wink.gif
and/or a space blanket.......or should I wish for a really nice sleeping bag, etc.
smile.gif
The trash bags could also be used hold things such as water, plants, etc.

Lastly, for the fifth of the most desperately needed items, some sort of container/cook pan such as a coffee can (What?, the Hoods with a Dutch Oven, I won’t believe it until my Cave Cooking 2 arrives.
wink.gif
Ron is always making extensive use of this (coffee can) and it would seem essential to purifying water unless you have some sublimated Iodine or other purifying method along.* I just wonder whether Ron has more than one can for digging, cooking and making pitch....tasty.
biggrin.gif
I also want to know where he hides it when he is hiking around in his tapes. I don’t remember seeing it.....Did I miss it?

*I was verifying 7 days and wondering how sick you could get in 7 days from unpurified water. I imagine it does not take too long???? Secondly, I noticed the poster did say “off trail wilderness adventure,” which is not quite the same thing as an unqualified survival situation....but I’ll leave my answer for now.

Hi Don,

"I just wonder whether Ron has more than one can for digging, cooking and making pitch....tasty. I also want to know where he hides it when he is hiking around in his tapes. I don’t remember seeing it.....Did I miss it?"

Good question. Although it isn't always in the video, in real life it hangs on the outside of my shoulder bag. It does everything. The darn cans last forever too. I get two to three seasons out of one can. What usually kills them is some numbnut steps on it in the dark (me). 205 lbs is not good for a tin can

What would I take? Karen of course. Between us we can make anything we are likely to need and have fun doing it.

Don,

The question was just a fun exercise to stimulate thought.

Your comment:

"I think everyone has missed the point, including the one who originally posed the question."

is incorrect because there was no point to be made.

We are having a whole discussion about the will to survive in another section. There was no point to be made here...this was just a thought provoking exercise.

Take care

I laughed more at Ron's response. I guess he doesn't have caffeine jitters after all, if the coffee can's last so long. (...and with all those wags out there, including me, yes I have heard of decaffinated coffee.)

Greg, it did stimulate my thought and after rereading your original post I'll stand by my answer. If nothing else I'm already ahead in answering your other similar posted question re some more items. Of course I keep going back to the thought that Mike Turber's answer, even if made in jest, is not too far off. Ron has enough will for both of us, and he weighs five pounds less than your stated weight. Maybe I should stop squeezing your questions so hard, and just carry Ron. Let's see I'll just rig a travois, Ron's tough it just has to be "good enough" and "carry" him from camp to camp. [Yes, I have the will to chop down a couple of saplings with a rock, etc.] So what if we only make 1/2 mile per day. When I get to camp I'll be exhausted. I hope Ron is a self-actuating sort of tool.

Thank's for your thought provoking question.

Hey Don!

Good deal! I 'ought ta let you know tho' (Greg already knows) I'll drool on your back

Yeah, just push my button and I'll make whatever. Karen used to do that but she pushed ALL my buttons and I got a LOT of work done!

If I can only have one thing, it would be a knife, probably somethign on the order of a Kabar Marine Utility. I am a firm believer in the old (Finnish?) saying, "In the Outdoors with a knife you may live, without it you will surely die." I believe that is how it goes.

I guess when it gets down to it none of us would be caught in the woods with just one tool. We have the Luxury of plenty. The most obvious choice to me is a good strong knife. With it I can make the tools to make primitive/original versions of what we purchase today.

I always have my intelect with me except in the more to common instances now of brain lock due to age. That is s a given item that need not be mentioned. I have 30+ years of outdoor experience and study behind me. With this and some time I could hope to find the right type of rock to "nap" a knife of sorts.
Then I could make a fire and start my bed of whatever material is handy. So I could rest and take stock of the situation and what my goals were. I do like the idea of Sania Twain. I thjink I would pick someone with a little more padding for this situation. I would vote for more compfort over high speed.
If I had to head for High Country any season in the US/Canada I would opt for one of the many good Khukuris that are available from our forum members. I know this is cheating a little because there are actually two knives and a steel in the set. But this would give me one large knife/machete/hatchet, one small knife and a sharpening steel/flint striker. with this, some time, adequate food, water. I could build everything I needed to survive. It has been done before. The best primitive survival skills that you can learn are those of the Mountain Men that opened up the US.

Cheers,

My knowledge aside, like ts, the one physical item I'd bring along would be a quality khukuri, preferably my HI 18" WWII model.

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, Babe, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride.

Hey Brian,

As a matter of fact. I spent two years in a maximum security facility in California.

I was running a drug rehab program so I got to go home every night

Hated the job. I was in more fist fights during those two years than I'd been in my entire life. Let em' die addicted

It would be a knife, but the situation would influence what type of knife. In most cases, a good, sturdy fixed blade (given a choice, a Battle Mistress or Anaconda). Otherwise I'd go with a SAK or Leatherman.

I'm gonna let this resurrection live.... blast from the past! I miss Ron. He was a great man and a good friend.

I would bring a pot. Not some pot, A pot.

This thread is only 15 years old. Wow. Leave it to a new member to find it. :D One thing..... a knife. Or I could carry a pack that contains a knife, sleeping bag, tent, first aid kit, food, pot, and so forth as my one thing.

I'd bring my soldier SAK (the current one hand opening version, not the alox one).

1999... I was already a lurker around here at that time, that's also the year I got married.
