If you get stuck on an island, would you prefer to have your usual/favorite knife fixed/folder..? or Would you rather have the more rust resistant water resistant specialized water knife?

This is an island surrounded by water, ala Cast Away where it could be raining a lot and your main source of food might be the ocean..

Remember, this is a scenario where you don't have your usual oil to keep your knife rust free. Just water from the island, rivers, ocean, rain etc..

I have so many usual favorite knives that I would do what I do now, given the chance to choose: I would bring the best-qualified knife for the job. That would probably not be what I carry around the house or around town.

If I had to choose only one, I'd go with some type of carbon/tool steel parang. Wouldn't be my usual knife for around here, but that's definitely what I'd grab.

Actually I might want a multi-tool with as many gadgets crammed in there as possible. Aside from carbon and tool steels, most stainless steels in modern blades are pretty stain resistant. Certainly nothing gets much harsher than salt water, but I'd imagine there would have to be a river or some other source of fresh water unless you want to drink salt water everyday.

I also don't think fish is the easiest available source of food given the skill it would take to cut a fish out of the water with a knife(near impossible if you ask me). More likely you might make a net out of something(presumably a knife would be involved in the process).

Admittedly a few of the tools in said multi-tool would be useless(who needs a screwdriver in a deserted island?), but having a folding prybar(an actual prybar) is always nice.

But even if Earth is struck by an asteroid and I happen to live in Hawaii, I don't expect to run into the "deserted island" scenario. Maybe the "living in the mountain/forest" scenario or camping.

Folder - Spyderco Pacific Salt or Leatherman Surge
Fixed - Spyderco Rock Salt

As a side note, I spend a lot of time Kayaking and hiking/camping in Mosquito Lagoon and on the St. Johns River and have a SOG Seal Pup Elite on my paddling vest - light, sharp, rust free, cheap.

My EDC is an Emerson CQC-10.

It should have a big wide polished stainless steel blade so I could use it to reflect the sunlight to any passing boats full of babes.

Folder: Leatherman Wave
Fixed1: Trailmaster SK5
Fixed2: Buck Paklite SKinner

Lotsa "crafting" abilities with the Wave, food acquisition/prep w/Paklite Skinner and the Trailmaster, well, for everything else.

This is my usual EDC (well, sometimes don't have my Trailmaster).

Puma German Expedition Knife. It can be used as a spear. I dont own one. I have two Eickhorn ones though but they not stainless.

Im not a folder type of dude. But if i had to have one it prob be Leatherman Wave.

Bark River Kephart - Woodland Special combo for fixed. Sure they're carbon steel but if you main tain you knife, I don't really need stainless knives. And those Barkies are one of my favorite fixed blades.

Folder: Spyderco Military - Queen Dan Burke Small Barlow.

But sir, don't forget, this is a situation wherein you are stuck on an island or a stranded trip wherein you did not take your oil to maintain your knife to keep it rust proof.

Ahh but you can find oil in plants etc. Even the oil between your nose and cheek will work and thats all Ed Fowler recommends for his knives. Also a carbon blade would likley form a patina partially protecting it so if you kept it reasonably dry you'd probably be ok.

On that note I'd still prefer a Stainless Condor Machete ( I was playing devils advocate before) and my multi-tool. I'd hate to be without my favorite folder but the multi-tool is so versatile and has a small blade that if I had a machete I think those two would be all I would need.

Quick question for the OP....Does this "Island" have any old abondoned Airplane parts or Car parts like say from WWII? If so I could take the steel from them and forge my own tools.

Hehe, good point.. Up to you, I guess there are different scenarios of stranded in an island...so i suppose it could have a plane if you desire...

I didn't really want to focus on the island but more of the whether to take a knife made for water versus a normal knife for a stranded situation, but the island scenario always makes things more interesting. :)

Just whiping your carbon blade after use goes surprisingly long. Like also stated, Island like that would have palms and palm's are great supply for... palm oil :)

I've been wondering since I joined this forum how long it would take someone to come up with that. The other thing you are likely to find is glass which makes a super sharp knife. If you know how to knap you can make really good knives and arrowheads, but simply breaking the glass can yeld useable tools.

For hunting and fishing you don't need steel, flint, obsidian, glass or other special materials. A knife, arrowhead, spear, or fork made from wood or sea shells will work perfect. Don't forget to look for items to make snares or other traps too.
