As others have mentioned, it would be helpful to know a bit more about your needs before the recommendations start flowing.
Would you prefer folders, fixed blades or don't know yet?
How are knife laws in your area?
What are the common tasks you will need to preform?
etc...
Cold steel natchez, the most wanted i have the CRC,Stiders,Busse,bm's,spys,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Well... of course I would take the mentioned approach and starting to research. That being said, if somebody gave 342 and said "you have to decide right now!", it would be:
- Fällkniven F1 with this TecLock Kydex sheath, because it's a great all-purpose utility knife, and legal to EDC over here.
[ 171 = US$ 249,88]
- an Eickhorn KM 3000 or Desert Command (can't decide whether to go for the dessert cam or the plain black version). As a Combat / Survival blade. Yeah, I know there are better things for survival, but I dig it.
[ 135 = US$ 197,28]
- a Victorinox Huntsman for EDC. To me it's just the perfect SAK: great selection of tools while remaining relatively slim and light, thus convenient to carry
[ 18,90 = US$ 27,62]
Sum: 324,90 = US$ 474,7
So I'd have 17,31 = US$ 25,30 left. That's enough for a nice little cheap one-hand folder. This one, for example.
[ 10,95 = US$ 16]
So... still 0,90 = US$ 1,31 left. That's enough for two scoops of bourbon vanilla at my local ice cream parlour.
Ah, gotcha! If that were the case and knowing what I already know now (hurricane disbursed my collection across the neighborhood?) hmmm...Right now I'm not looking for "recommendations" per se. I'm more interested in what you guys would buy and why.
Remember you have no knives. You a hard cap of only $500 to buy the knives you want and no more for the rest of your life.
Don't forget you've got to sharpen your new aquisitions! Or is that outside your $500?
