If you had $500

You will always want another knife. With that in mind, I still think I could be happy and do everything that I need to do with:

a beautifully handled puukko and sheath
a ritter minigrip
a good fillet knife and sheath
a good sharpening system

I'm not including saws, axes, pliers, clippers, diagonals, etc. in this as those are dedicated tools that I don't lump in with knives.

Small Sebenza $330
Rat 7 ~$110
Victorinox Huntsman $20-$30
Victorinox Manager ~$20

i think i could probably live with that.

If I'm not allowed the hatchet and saw, I'll substitute a Spyderco Native.

I would get a Spyderco ZDP-189 CF Caly 3, and when they (hopefully) come out in the next year or so, a Ti/CF CPM M-4 Spyderco Military.

I could quite happily EDC those two knives for the rest of my life without giving a second thought about the others.

First off, I have to say that you picked the right amount of money to start a complete set up IMO.

If I had only $500 and had to buy a set up with the provisions you stated (I have no knives and after this I will buy no knives), I would get:

Bark River Bravo -150
Victorinox Tinker -13
Machete -20
Buck 110 stock version -30
good hatchet -40
tacticool folder(s) -160
ocean knives- kershaw amphibian - 34
2 laminated Mora knives -30

TOTAL= 477 -so you have room for adjustments

$500? That's it? Forever?
Impossible to happy with that, but at first blush I would say...

Case Swayback Jack Chestnut Bone CV $55
GEC Northfield Scout (Trapper) in Stag with long pulls $129
Queen Large Stockman in D2 $55
Buck 110 $40
Nice SAK $30
Ka-Bar 7" fighter (Carbon steel, incl sheath) $55
Spyderco Paramilitary in D2 $125

I already want to change that list.

Great Question!

I am assuming that multi tools are not included.

If it was me I would want:

1 nice fixed blade: Ontario Rat-7 ($110.00)

3 EDC folders: Manix 2 ($85.00), Pacific Salt($70.00 you gotta have some H-1) and Stretch ($85.00)

1 Beater: Tenacious ($35.00)

1 Dress knife: Case CV Swayback in amber bone ($60.00)

With the remaining $55.00 I think that I would get the Pac Salt reground to a FFG.

My wish list.. and it grows daily:
Byrd G10 Cara Cara $25.00
Rat Izula $40.00
Kershaw RAM $56.00
Cold Steel Recon 1 $65.00
Benchmade 580 Barrage $82.00
Spyderco Manix 2 $90.00
Benchmade 890 Torrent $91.00
Benchmade 710 McHenry Williams $110.00
Emerson Mini A100 $110.00
Benchmade HK BMHK14205 $110.00
Emerson Mini Commander $120.00
Emerson Mini CQC-15 $120.00
Benchmade Doug Ritter RSK1 $120.00
Al Mar Shrike $125.00
Emerson A100 $130.00
Emerson CQC-10 $150.00
Emerson CQC-14 Snubby $150.00
Zero Tolerance MUDD $150.00

A Wetterlings 13" or 15" Hatchet
A good Japanese style folding saw
A Leatherman AL or Victorinox Spirit multitool
A Victorinox Manager keychain knife
A Victorinox Climber Plus
A Fallkniven S1 or Bark River Knives Bravo 1 + a custom sheath with firesteel slot

I believe all that is well under $500.

Chris Reeve small Sebenza w/bocote inlays.

I'd do what I did this month.
RAT RC5 or 6-if you do your shopping right, 100 dollars.
Koyote or some other custom bushcraft companion made from .125" steel and a nice scandi edge. $100-150
Becker BK11 or RAT Izula-$40
EK Model 5 or AF Boker-$100

Now you have your bases covered. You have a use and abuse knife, an easy access slicing/skinning/filletting knife, an EDC fixie, a world class fighting knife, and 100 to spend on eye candy. Buy right, buy once, and cover all your bases.

15 inch Wetterlings
A quality wood handle fillet knife
Fallkniven 3g H1
Spyderco Pacific Salt
Leatherman tti
Mora fillet

Around 500.

From where I am now?

A CRK Professional Soldier and a Mnandi. And that would probably cover the entire $500.

From zero knives?

Hm, tough question. Since I like working with a knife trinity (Large folder, Small folder, Multitool; and maybe a fixed blade) Probably a SAK of some variety, and a mix of SOGs and benchmades.

first off i would get a couple nice folding edc knives as that is what is used most and i would have another if one failed or got lost.
then i would get a good quality 4inch bladed camping knife
multitools are quite handy sometimes, so a leatherman charge
i have wanted an izula for some time now, so that is next
another big factor is the warranty. if you never buy another knife, i would say lifetime warranty is very important

-Kershaw NRG 1740 $55
-Benchmade mini griptilian $60
-Bark river gunny $150
-leatherman charge $100
-Rat izula $55

that leaves $80 for something else decided at a later time
