If you had an endless budget, would knife collecting...

I have a lot of knives that I've collected through the years. Not a whole lot, but an ample collection. Ample to the effect that if I want a knife, I sell one of my existing knives to fund the purchase of another. This way if I sell a knife and take a profit or a loss, it's my loss, not a loss to my family. I have to say I enjoy collecting knives just as much as I enjoy using them. I'll admit seeing knives come up on the exchange and having to sell one of my own before the exchange knife sells, can be quite stressful and rewarding at the same time. It's definitely a game of chance. I've had good number of blades slip through my fingers and have also scored big time by way of this system.

I sat back the other day and wondered: If I had an endless budget and could buy any knife when ever I wanted, would collecting be as fun?

If you had an endless budget would collecting knives be as fun or as much as a hobby as it once was?

I'm not sure.

I've often wondered if I was to win the lottery (millions) if things that bring me joy now would still with all the money. I normally use the forum as a type of research center so if I could buy any knife I wanted I may be less involved. Gosh...imagine getting a 20lb box of knives delivered and taking an hour to open and handle them all...*drool*

These thoughts put me to sleep more often than sheep.

You would probably be collecting more expensive and rare knives, or hire a full time knife maker to make whatever knife you want, when you want! haha

Yes it would be as fun and more fun to me as I have other hobbies, but I would be able to buy many more knives as well. I would still only buy the knives I really want and I think it would be cool to have a new custom coming in once every two weeks plus a mid tech or production every now and then.

Same here. 9 times out of 10 I drift off at night thinking about which knives I would buy if my funds were unlimited.

And about the topic at hand , I can only imagine that buying , collecting , using knives (for me) would become infinitely more enjoyable. Also , I would get 4 or 5 copies of my favorite knives just to have.

My number of knives would greatly increase I don't think the fun would be there though.
I enjoy looking for a deal and trying to scoop it up before someone else gets it.
Balancing the budget with the need is also challenging but it is all part of the chase.

Calling up you favorite manufacturer / smith and ordering 3 of everything would get boring. There would be no excitement you could have everything you want.

I would still like the opportunity to put that last statement to the test.

but I agree with this too so I'm kind of torn on my answer, lol

I don't actually think that would be true.

If I had unlimited budget, I'd still probably be obsessively-compulsively researching purchases because I'd want to make sure I was getting good value for my money. In that case not so much because I had limited funds, but because I just like supporting makers of good quality products.

I'd probably buy a modest house with a hugeass garage/workshop, but everything in it would be top quality. Cars, tools, guns, knives, furniture, rugs, appliances, kitchen utensils... aw man it'd be great.

I'd also be the biggest PITA customer ever if I got ripped off on something 'cause I could afford to be :)

Edit: Forgot watches. I'd have some nice wristwatches too.

I disagree. There is just too many knives that are rare that I would want to hunt. There are also too many makers out there with really really long lists.

The joy wouldn't be in being able to buy everything, it would be in the hunt. Going to every knife show around the country, entering lotteries, schmoozing and having fun.

To answer my own question, it would be fun for the first year or so. After receiving everything you want when you want it, for so long, the satisfaction would without a doubt dissipate. But then again, you'd have so much more money to do and buy so many other things, one would forget about knives for a while. The Emperor's villa at Caesar's in Las Vegas tends to make people forget things.

Thanks for the input guys. Keep it coming.

It would make it way more fun!

The knives I want are like $3,000.00 and not even customs.... just kitchen knives...

No, I'm not interested in having a big box of knives sitting there. I can only carry one. If I have a couple of other folders, higher-quality in the $200-$400 range that I enjoy , and some nice fixed blades with good steels and nice wooden grips, then I'm happy...and content.

Even with an endless budget collecting traditionals is more of finding the best examples of knives that may not have been made in 50-100 years, money won't necessarily help, luck and research tend to give you the best results.
