If you had an endless budget, would knife collecting...

If I had an unlimited budget I suspect my passion would shift from collecting to testing. Forget ordering three of each model and order a couple hundred, enough to give a really good sample size. Edge retention, lateral strength, speed and efficacy of sharpening, I'm a sucker for objective data and there's honestly not much out there. That's if my budget was truly unlimited.

I'm going to concur with Insipid Moniker, I'd like to try a wide array of knives, and see how they stack up against the recommendations from knife mags, and internet. Expensive, cheap, obscure, whatever. I'd just like to see if they fit me.

I think I would have even more fun than I do now. I'd have display cases full of perfect specimens (maybe even start a knife museum of sorts), and have drawers full of users. I would be able to expand the scope of my interests much further than I can afford to pursue now. I think it would be great!

so in answer to the question,
"If you had an endless budget would collecting knives be as fun or as much as a hobby as it once was?" is,
i would think any material happiness would soon wear off...

It would be twice as fun!! Imagine all those grails we can never have, and to one day buy them all.... I'd be happy till the day I died :)

In addition to my previous comments, I'd be reviewing the crap out of all my purchases and posting the heck out of them.

What good is being able to buy whatever you want if you can't help others make informed purchasing decisions, thus ensuring that your favorite products will continue to be available in the future? Good products deserve good press.

I don't think my collecting habits would change very much. I could spend a lot more money on knives than I do, my main joy is getting what I consider a $300 dollar knife for $150. I really have no desire for folders costing $1000.

Oh boy, if I had an unlimited budget I would need to build a garage not bigger knife safe. Have tried several knives for some reason a delica and small sebenza insingo get all my pocket time.

But to the original topic, I would probably try a lot more options but it would most likely take the fun out of it.

I'd probably sell most of the knives I have now and transition to a very small number of higher end production knives or customs, and then I'd be largely done with knife acquisitions.

With the materials available today the big knife companies are turning out some amazing production knives with quality that surpasses many customs (IMO)....one doesnt need to spend a ridiculous amount of money to rock a killer blade.

If money was no issue, I'd start making my own knives. I'm already a machinist and programmer. I'd buy some machines, heat treating equipment, go to school, get testing equipment and enjoy my "hobby" even more. I'd also be able to buy multiples of each production knife I buy. One to keep and one to test to destruction.

I'd also hunt down my "grail" knives both new and old. Every steel, new and old.

I'd also be able to indulge in my other hobbies even more. Flashlights, guns, cars and boats.

I'd still enjoy the hunt though, And I'd pace myself. The other day I got three knives in one delivery. I almost didn't know what to do with myself. LOL!

Nice post  that's deep

If I had endless money, knife collecting would be even more fun. It'd be just one of the things I'd have an accumulation of. :)

Id gladly pay all the exorbitant secondary market prices for customs and be "one of those guys"

I'd be spending more time commissioning the manufacture of designs that were of highly specialized design or of currently limited market in spite of their highly functional nature. I would still be picking up stuff for myself, but I'd spend most of my unlimited resources trying to bring appreciation of good functional design to others.

use the money to open up my own knife company to produce affordable quality knives that are designed, made, and sold in the US, thus producing jobs for fellow Americans.

I believe it would be one of those the more money u have the more bills and problems u have things......U would just move up into higher knife class with spending as u would with everything else. Not everyone but must people end up in about same position they were in

It wouldn't be fun. A big part of buying an expensive knife is the satisfaction in knowing that I worked hard for the cash that bought said knife.
