As an exercise is making sure I hadn't become a knife snob, one time on a week long trip for work I only took a carry on bag (no knife)
After I got where I was going, I went to walmart and picked up one of their blister packed folding knives (Ozark trail brand iirc) for $1 plus tax. I then took it back to my hotel and sharpened it to almost shaving sharp(it would take hair off of your hand, but I wouldn't want it on my face. Lol) by first using the bottom of the coffee cup provided in the room, then stropping on the hotel supplied note pad (cardboard, then paper) the knife was perfectly serviceable for the week I was there for pocket knife stuff(opening packages, cutting string, cutting apples, ect), and I almost hated to leave it in the room when I was done.
So, there you go. A pocket knife and $28.50 to spend on food!
I also like the swipe a steak knife idea. I've seen tramontina steak knives at a few places, and I bet they are pretty decent if their machetes are a good example of their blades.
