Hey guys,

I know fixed blades are generally better for the outdoors, but if you had to choose 1 folder for the outdoors, what would it be?

Personally, I'd go with the one that's been doing the job for the last 5+ years

Chris Reeve Umnumzaan!!!

(I'm biased towards it since it is my latest EDC :D)

Thick blade, Titanium handles and frame lock, S30V blade steel. Realistically the Sebenza would be preferred since it has an easy take down with a single allen wrench. Great for cleaning in the field, especially with it's open build construction.

Just my .02, J.

Lots of good folders for the outdoors. Specific choice depends on what kind of outdoors. Spyderco Military is a good all-around choice. Slipjoints like the stockman and trapper patterns have been popular and effective for a long time.

Yesterday I received my new Buck 450RD Protege. A good, strong and very light folding knife that did surprise me and which I will try out this summer during camping and hiking. I also like the folders of the Swedish company EKA Knivar. My old Swede 60 with plastic handle has a nice big and thick blade, I like it a lot.

For folders with more tools than just a blade, I would choose between a Victorinox Soldier (model 2009) and a Victorinox Farmer.

So many good ones! Sebbies, BMs, Spydies, but if I had to choose and I have a couple to choose from, I'd still take my OHT.

So much, that is well made in a nice package. I like the idea of several tools instead of a single dedicated blade ;)

I think I would go with Paul Risk's suggestion (Outdoor Safety and Survival) and take a stockman. I carried one for the last 10yrs or so, then it disapeered and two days later my wife gave me a sodbuster jr. Still not completely convinced that was a coincidence.

Swiss Army Trekker. The blade locks and it has a saw.

Up the price and a Ritter Griptilian (RSK Mk1) comes to mind.

Up the $$ a lot and I'm looking at a Sebenza.

Lately I've been using a GEC #23 Pioneer paired with a Victorinox Spirit multitool. The both fit together in a Leatherman Surge pouch I had.

If it could be only one, I'd go with a Vic Outrider.

I've used a Case large stockman, Victorinox knives, and a GEC pioneer trapper in the woods, they all work fine. Just make sure you don't pull out of a cut when you are using a non-locking knife.

The pioneer trapper was my main bushcraft knife for a couple of months. The springs are really strong, and the halfstops can potentially save you if it closes by accident. Having a spare blade is always nice. The problem is that it's fairly heavy, and really better suited to belt carry or when wearing heavy pants like jeans. I got used to it and even carried it in my sweatpants without any real problems.

My Vic Rucksack. But if you meant single blade folders, I'm less certain. Maybe an Emerson or BM Ritter, something like that.

Folders for woods use seem to be a hot topic this week.

For my one folder, slicing ability and an acute point for fine work is paramount.

The one that use in this role is my Custom Dozier Folder, a slimed down version of Bob Dozier’s Folding Hunter, this knife offers great edge retention and a very solid lock-up, the stabilized Cocobolo scales are as durable as they are good looking.

Obviously not a substitute for a heavy camp knife; this tool exemplifies the qualities I look for in a folding knife.

I would probably go with my Outrider...

If you exclude SAK's, I would have to say BM Griptillian. I love that knife.

a like Large stockman pattern knives.. as well as any victorinox saks... also hard to beat a buck 110 or a 112..

I'd probably go with the Vic Farmer as well. The saw and the ease of sharpening the main blade make it more versatile than my other choices.

Second would be a Buck 110/Camillus 866
