What's a good fighting knife to bring along? A Bowie? A Fighter?

Please educate me :)

Randall Mod. 14. Its got bowie & fighter written all over it. And you can't forget something that folds, an SAK or multi-purpose and a Carson lg. Mod. 4. That should do it.

If I had to go into combat...

I would hope that I would not ever need a "fighting" knife for said combat.

That said, I think a CS SRK would be my choice for all-around use.

If I was down to using a knife in hand to hand combat I would want a huge bowie/short machete backed up with a large-caliber pistol! Realistically niether would be on my belt so I'd probably use the USMC-style combat knife, it is fairly light (meaning it would be on my web gear), has good balance, a solid steel pommel and it's been proven in combat. The Cold Steel SRK is good too and as tough as a chisel!

Hi Son Tao,
Don't see you away from TFL or TAC very often!
:D

The Randall 14 is a good choice, but go with the carbon steel blade. It has MUCH better edge retention and sharpness than the stainless version.

A Chris Reeves Project II would also be a great choice.

(Although I personally dislike the supplied sheath)

The Colt Steel Carbon V Trailmaster is a tough knife worth your consideration too.

If you're interested in going full custom though, the one that really trips my trigger is Jerry Hossom's Millennium Ranger! (Warning, Extreme drool factor.)

as you may or may not know,im working on getting in shape so i can enter the army. there is no doubt in my mind that i may wind up going to pakistan or afganistan to fight.
i went to AG Russel today and looked at a randall model 1 w/maple burl, IIRC. it was a beaut,so i couldnt possibly carry it. I would most likely go with the Ka-Bar USMC fighter, or a custom... im getting a few ideas in my head about what i would like, but im not ready to order anything yet.

With the Ka-Bar, you could buy a couple for cheap, and bring some with you wherever you go, that way,if by some chance you break it,youve got another.

Or you could leave it in a BG, as a statement.

I have a Ka-Bar, they seem like sturdy knives. I forgot to mention that if you buy a Strider, you get a 20% off military discount.

No doubt about what I'd be carrying - the ever-indestructible, loves you when you abuse it, tank tough, Busse Combat Steel Heart.

Never used one in combat, but I sure do beat the crap out of mine. The edge retention on those things is nothing short of amazing. If I had to dig, chop, split, hammer, etc. with a knife it would definitely be my first choice.

If I wanted to go cheap and expendable I'd take the battle tested Ka-Bar.

Heheheheh.
I thought that would grab you! :D

Unless things have changed VERY recently, Jerry's not taking any new orders at the moment, but he MIGHT take one for Milpers,(Don't remember if you're Reserves or not.) you'd have to ask.

I know he keeps several different models in stock as "show goods" so you might email him and ask what he's got on hand.

Hope you get lucky!
:D

Unfortunately I am in the middle of two shows, where I usually focus on knives with pretty handles, and I have nothing on hand that I feel is suitable for military use. I'm scrambling to remedy that, particularly since I have pledged a knife per month to the U. S. Army Rangers here at Ft. Benning (or wherever). I am also trying to dig out from under a backlog of orders from some wonderfully patient customers.

hopefully I will have some knives available for delivery to military personnel only near the end of the year, but will not be accepting orders for them until they are on hand. I am also joining the Strider Guys in offering a 20% discount to all active duty military personnel.

I'm sorry I'm so ill prepared to be helpful, but I guess that reflects where a lot of us were a week and a half ago. Soon that will change for all of us. I'm designing a new model to be called "Retribution".

Thanks for the nice remarks.

Busse - Probably Badger Attack or Natural Outlaw. These babies are tough! They hold an edge, and they don't rust all that easily.

Well, there it is, straight from the Hossum's mouth!
:D
Get used to it Jerry, with knives as sweet as yours, you're never going to catch up.

Sorry ST, didn't mean to tease you.

The more I think about this question, the more I get to the conviction that a dagger style blade is ideal for such situations (combat, self defense or knive fighting). Following a pic that suit my ideas. Unfortunately to expensive for me at the moment.

Walter Brend: ELIMINATOR DAGGER, 5 ½" double hollow ground dagger style blade, stainless steel guard, black micarta scales, 440V, satin finish, skull crusher. This knife features a wider than normal blade which reinforces the tip. The knife features a custom-made Kydex sheath made by Frank Sigman.

Well speaking from the knives that I curretnly Own.

My busse basic #7 on my side, Emmerson commander for folding knive, and cold steel safe Keeper II for boot knife.

No question,

The Next Generation Tomahawk, courtesy of ATC. I doubt a more practical, more rugged, more fearsome edged combat weapon exists right now.

Also, an SAK with obligatory corkscrew and bottle opener, for those quiet nights.
