If you had to go into combat...

Another vote for the Randall Mod 14.

Just make sure your unit will let you take one. If not, then take a good quality utility folder perhaps a Sebenza.

Gary,
Do you still have room for ammo after loading all that iron? :)
BTW, You also going to have an M9 bayonet with you.

Within the confines of my small collection, I would definitely take my straight handled Battle Mistress, with cordura and sheath with liner and stone pouch. Backup would probably be my trusty BM 750 (Pinnacle).

Love those pictures of Randalls! I need a 1 or a 14 real bad!

Lots of great knives out there and it all boils down to personal preference, taking all factors into consideration. Guess that's why there are lots of great knives out there!

My choice would be the Randall model 16, Special Fighter. It has everything I'd want, all rolled up into one knife. It's basically a full tang model 1 or a 7" model 14, however you want to look at it. In my opinion, this knife is the perfect blend of fighter and utility. It lacks nothing as a utility knife and will hold it's own against any fighting knife. Also, it's backed up by a great company with a great American heritage and has some "sex appeal".

I was standing around, talking with an F-18 pilot as his plane was being refueled, wishing I was in his shoes right about now. I'm proud of our country and our fighting brothers. Also proud of our great American companies, such as Busse Knives, Randall, Chris Reeve.....Our craftsmen, such as Jerry Hossom, Walter Brend, etc...Guys, get any knife you like, as long as it's made here in the U.S.

I tend to carry a knife while on patrol not as much for fighting purposes as for general tasks. As a corpsman, I focus on taking care of my Marines and select my equiptment accordingly.
My current choice in the field is the Livesay RTAK. This is an extremely overbuilt chopper that will not fail. I have modified the sheath by bolting an old M-16 mag pouch to it. This makes a large enough carry pouch to hold my entire personal survival kit plus a couple of easily accessible battle dressings along with OTC Meds.
I'm currently looking at the BK&T Brute as well.(It's a little lighter and should do the job just about as well.
Hope this helps.

I've been draggin' this one along to work for the past week or so...
Made by Rob Criswell, along the lines of his swords, it's a 12" bladed Tanto of 1/4" A-2 steel with a stainless tsuba, balance is directly ahead of the tsuba, amazing balance!
But I also would say the mention of the Cold Steel TrailMaster is an excellent choice as the one I have is also a whacker and a half!

A quality Kukri, for sure. Best real combat blade in the world, bar none. Ask a Gurkha.

I would have to bring my Cold Steel Recon Scout bowie, and my Spyderco's. I would really like to have a Randall 14.

Well Darn Larry,

It's good to see you haven't lost your sense of humility...lol

We've got one of your Paragon "Battle Bowie" pieces, and love it greatly. The handle kinda sucked as delivered, but with a pair of goggles, a dust mask, and a Dremel tool, I made it "right"... :D

Now...for a good kydex sheath...

Randall's? My love and joy! The #14 BP? Sweet! The old style #16-7 "Special fighter" with the Border Patrol handle? Even sweeter!

That Dozier looked nice too!

Thanks for sharing, as a former Army officer, I'll be happy to add you to my list of knife makers who will NEVER get my business.

To answer the question, go to the HI Imports forum. Not only are these knives what I would choose, but they have been in use in combat for many, many years and are proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

The man offers a $100 discount to enlisted personnel and you add him to your list of makers you would never buy from, what's up with that?

In regards to what would be a good combat knife: the issued KABAR is still a good choice. Reasonably tough and not too heavy to be carrying around, it will do the job.

Ripper,

I reacted that way because I thought it would be another "officer bashing" type post. I took enough of that crap on active duty, I won't take it as a civilian.

Having said that, Harley communicated to me about past problems that he has had as a knife maker, and I understand his comment. I over-reacted, and apologize to Harley.

I hope that whoever in the military gets his knives leaves them sticking in bad guys whereever they are stationed!

Roger that, sir.

Not a doubt in my mind. Chris Reeve Project 1, good fighter and big enough to chop some and will penatrate well. Swiss tool for fix it, and spyderco calypso for tiny jobs that need a hell of an edge.

Make that (2) of us for the Tomahawk  ...incredible weapon!
