I thought I once read somewhere that you had to be a certain age to participate? I'm 17. I would love to, but I def. don't have the money for the lottery passarounds... The other type I could do, but I'm not a big "user". I would only be playing around with the knife and maybe cutting one thing a day. (Opening a box, bag, cutting string...etc.) This is all stuff that doesn't really test a knife. I would be better off letting a "user" get in on the passaround and be able to post a good review for me.

Yes, there have been several requests from under 18 people, but I don't think it's prudent, sorry.

(I guess I should have adde more cattegories to the poll)

I figured so, and I actually agree with the logic. Oh well, only a year to go. Once I get out of HighSchool I'll hopefully get to be more of a "user" if I go into the Army ROTC...I'll see then. Thanks for the quick response Dave.

TBG, let me play devil's advocate here...again, I am not against the idea of passarounds, in fact I like the idea but I would like to answer the original question as to why I have not participated. Consider this, you are paying 10% of a brand new knife...after it has gone through the passaround, it has been used by 10 people (and possibly resharpened), certainly that devalues the knife. Personally, I don't like buying used knives but that issue aside, what if you don't like the knife?

RL

Well the knife that is used in these passarounds needs to be purchased. So everyone involved splits the costs evenly. As for it being used by 10 people, the value would go down with the wear the knife would exhibit. However I see only one person that should be affected by this, the Winner. I am not sure how many people would be upset by the show of wear on a knife that the paid 1/10th of the sale price. The winner gets the best deal there is out there:

Medic1210- Lrg Sebenza- $30

Lmalterna- CRK Green Beret- $35

Randal16-1- Strider Sng- $40

Razorhunter- Surefire- $40 (Consolation prize)

(I forget who won)- Surefire E2e- $11

I have never seen deals like these before. Of course there are 6-9 other people besides these folks that investing in the knife and only got to handle if for there money right? Of the 5 Passaround/Raffles that have been done. Nearly half the cast has signed up for them all as they feel they got there moneys worth and the odds are just too good to ignore.

These types of passarounds offer more than just a chance to win it of course. The passarounds are designed to give folks a chance to handle high end knives they generally would never get a chance to handle, test, evaluate or sometimes even afford. What have I got out of them?

-I learned that the Sebenza was not just hype, and learned what I was missing. I bought one before the passaround was even complete

-I was able to decide that the CRK Green Beret, although a great knife, was not worthy of being in my Top 10 want list. Simply do to the amount of other great knives out there

-I learned that I was missing out on the worlds best made flashlights and owned a Surefire less than two weeks from the passarounds completion

-I was able to handle a Strider folder, something I wanted to do for a long long time.

The week that I had each of these items made it well worth it to me to pay my share to purchase the item. And even after sending it off, I have had the excitement in knowing it could be returning to me for good.

If you review the passarounds I am refering to, You will see many of the same comements such as (From the winner) "This thing still looks brand new" (From the people who didn't win) "It was well worth the money, when does the next one start?"

One thing is for sure, this style is not for anyone. But if you want to test out some high end knives that you are interested and don't have the means to handle one in person or don't have the money to just spring for one and hope you like it. The Passaround/Raffle is the only way to go:)

1. I'm not fast enough to get in on it before it's full.

2. I don't feel like spending the money at the time.

well i would like to do it, more interested in the lotery ones, but more times then not i'm just to slow, even though i check bladeforums multiple times a day, but ohh well, email me next time one starts, trevor@zcs.net:)
thanks
trevor
but i like the idea of like the sebenza i would love to carry it for a week and see what i think, or another folder, so ohh well

How does one know that one of the contestants keep the knife without passing it? Or loses it?

What if they refuse to pay? What if, what if?

Otherwise, a neat concept, and I would be very eager to sign up.

If you keep the knife DaveH will hunt you down and you don't want that. ;)

I have done some of the first passarounds. I think they are great.
A couple I did not do because I did not want to try the knife that was being passed around or it looked like I would be so far down the list I did not want to wait for it. Some I just missed out on.

Thanks again DaveH, Sal and the others who did the passarounds.

When the knife is sent it's sent priority, with delivery confirmation and insurance if required.

That way you can tell who has it, and yeah, basically I pester whoever keeps it for to long.

Remember though, I'd have your name, address, phone and bladeforums ID. So it would be kind of costly to run off with it.

Not that I would dare do anything like that. (Just to be clear).

But I see you have several failsafes just incase the worst happens.

Sounds like a good idea guys.

This may seem corny, but has anyone ever thought of starting a sort of 'guild' of passarounds? Having membership and each member taking turns starting the new passarounds? Seems to me It'd be a neat little hobby. ;)

It's depressing to try a knife, but then find yourself unable to buy it (my knife budget lately has been noticeably less than 0 :grumpy: )
Also sometimes I think the trial time is too short (trial period should be no less than a week, otherwise is becomes a big hassle).

think the trial time is too short

I guess I can understand that from the user point of view. But from the management point of view shorter eval times mean less likely the chance of someone forgetting they have it, leaving on vacation, etc.

Remember the first Temperence passaround? Several people ended up holding on to it for WAY WAY over a week. It took like 6 months + to finish, by that time people had forgotten about it, moved, etc.

My feeling is, 3 days should be enough time to figure out if you like it or not.

Sounds like a great idea! I have never been in one and I am glad for all of the clarification as I didn't know there were different types of passarounds.

I probably wouldn't participate in a pass-around because I really don't have the time. I don't have enough "quality time" with my own knives at it is..IMO. :D :D :D

But you guys keep doing it, because I like reading your opinions on the knives you check out. And for God's sake...post more photos of knives, we need more eye candy.:D :D

if i am intersted in a knife i will buy it

i am not interested in "renting" a knife....especially after 2-9 people have used/abused it

I'd like to point out a few things, every passaround I've been involved in(and I've been in the begining, and close to the end of the passaround) the knife has come to me in sharp unabused condition, if I had the opportunity to test drive some of my other higer priced toys,(GPS, Minidisc Recorder, Garden Tractor...) I might have made different decisions.

One last thing, sometimes ya just gotta trust people and give them a chance, sometimes they'll suprise you.

Dave you'd just have to be expert on this one, going on what I've seen here.

I think it's a great concept myself. Just no way it's feasible, being in Au.
