Until a month ago I was in S. Korea, where the blade length limit was 3". Now I'm a little closer to the action, but the length limit for anything I keep in my room is still 3". Once I get my discharge I'll definitely sign up for one.

Just to make it clear, participants are not out to "abuse" anything, one of the points of a passaround is use it for a few days to cut the normal things and carry it.

Yes things like scratches and etc will happen. But those kinds of thing don't interfere with the knife itself so yoyu can still see how it works enough to figure out if you need a new one.

The green Salsa was the original passaround it went on 3 passaround trips from Hawaii to the arctic circle. When I finally sold it almost a year later, it had some wear on the handles and some scratches on the blade but it was still in darn good probably 90% condition.

The temperence fixed blade is another example, it's out on it's third passaround now. I have never yet heard a comment like "oh, it's in poor shape and abused", sure it's not new but I think it has held up fine.

Ditto on the Shrike passaround, Mike Dye commented that when it came back you could almost never tell several people used it.

SO I don't think it's a forgone conclusion the knives will be trashed, beside in the passaround that you don't have to buy you're only out postage.

All of the above. Most of the knives don't interest me and a "rent-a-knife" for a week is a royal P.I.A. Slipping of to the P.O. just doesn't fit into my schedule well. I'm fortunate, since there is an EXTREMELY well stocked albeit expensive cutlery store nearby. I go to check out new stuff about 3-4 times a year.

I'm amazed I didn't notice this thread earlier! If anyone has any questions about how the lottery passarounds work, read the threads in my sig and ask me.

Thanks for you input, one thing I'll try and do is make the rules and procedures more clear in the signup.

The next passaround I'll post the signup in the testing and review forum, so look there for now.

Hint: early to mid next week would be a good time to look. ;)

Somebody else said it (Bandaidman) but I too will buy a knife if I want it. I would not pass around my watch or my fly rod or my truck or my girlfriend...I feel the same way about my knives.

I work full time, also in full time grad. school, and working my internship - but this ends in a few more months.

got any cheese and crackers with my whine??

OK, I have more time to answer in detail now. I'm certainly interested in any of the passarounds with small blades, even up to 4". I'd love to get in on the Battle Mistress passaround, but if I get caught with that in the barracks I would end up in serious trouble, and I wouldn't be able to get much use out of it sitting in my room. So, if you do another Sebenza passaround, I'm in.

I didn't participate because:

1. Most of the knives didn't interest me.

2. There wasn't room to participate in the passarounds of the knives I was interested in.

3. Some of my questions and concerns went unanswered, or were ignored when this passaround thing first got started.

4. Too many smug attitudes involved in the majority of the passarounds.

5. Too much B.S., especially when someone doesn't return the knife, or send it on as required.

3. Some of my questions and concerns went unanswered, or were ignored when this passaround thing first got started.

yes, because they where addressed or where wrong. For example, you suggested that we collect signature on delivery to keep minors from participating. However the PO doesn't ID check to prove anyone is over 18. So that doesn't gain us anything.

Too many smug attitudes involved in the majority of the passarounds.

Well could be, it would be better to point to specifics rather then a general accusation.

Too much B.S., especially when someone doesn't return the knife, or send it on as required.

Are you talking about the "Drama" of spyderpunk and Lady Colt? In my estimation those where far more restrained than a good portion of the thread in GBU or W&C. Unfortunately even people with good intentionsneed help being reminded to move stuff along, etc.

For good or bad I take it rather seriously that people act responsibly and do what they say. And I take it seriously that someone has trusted me to do my best in looking after their donated knife. That does result in some drama.

I would imagine then that you would support putting us in our own forum then to keep us away from the others? Is so please let Spark know.

Here a thread where I might have ignored you:

Code 3 - This is from your post on 8-16-2002:

DaveH, you wasted $50 bucks on an attorney, which could have been used to buy yourself a Gold membership here.

-----

First it's rather hard to determine what a "waste" is, in fact I think it was money well spent. Further if you had noticed at the time my "gold membership had just expired I renewed it shortly there after.

If and it's resonable to do so, you would like to help Spark raise support or curtail costs, perhaps we could shut down some of the unused forums?

-----

Instead of asking for copies of drivers licenses, you can always send the knife restricted delivery, with adult signature required.

Already addressed above.

------------

Should you wish to cite further places where you where ignored please do so.

Also if you wish you can move this to GBU or W&C because all useful content will now probably cease.

For me I guess the main reason is I find it more enjoyable to seek out a knife I'm interested in on my own at a show or retailer than to have to wait for someone to mail it to me when I come up on the list. Call me spoiled or whatever but I realize what I want.
I don't usually buy used merchandise and that plays a strong role in my decision not to participate. I research purchases thoroughly through the use of the Internet, magazine comparison tests and reviews, and word of mouth from friends and acquaintances.
As an example, I once bought( and had fully paid for) a $17,500.00 brand new Honda Goldwing, not only without ever having ridden ANY Goldwing, but without ever having sat on one with the engine running!! The evidence presented was so positive I was sure I'd love the machine and I did!
Hope some of this makes sense.

Larry S.

I've avoided them because in all honesty I never really asked how they work. The idea seems simple. Someone buys a knife plays with it for a while and then mails it to the next guy on the list.
I'm sure I'm missing some of the fine details but I'd have to assume that's the general idea right?
I never really wanted to get into it because I know once the knife came to me I'd want to keep it. I'm not saying I'd swipe it or anything but I know once I got it in my hands I'd likely want to buy it from whomever and interrupt the flow. Plus I know I'm too damn lazy to get it mailed off to the next person in line on time. Or with my luck I'd loose it.

Seemed like too many problems to me. Sure it might be fun but I'm just not seeing it being for me.

Dave;

You asked why we didn't participate, and I gave you my reasons.

I didn't reply to this thread to stir the pot; I just gave you my reasons as requested.

I would love to participate in the future, provided the knife involved interested me, and there was ample room for more people to do so, but I imagine that won't be happening after my comments.

I haven't made any comments about the passarounds beyond what I said before they were initiated, and what I said today. I fully support a passaround forum, provided you can convince Spark that it is justified. If he chooses not to create a new forum, I personally don't see a problem leaving it here, or even posting them in the review forum. It's not my decision either way, and if you folks are generally happy with the way they have been going, that's great.

I did ask why you didn't send USPS with restricted delivery, adult signature required, and yuo stated they don't check I.D. if this was the case, report them to the postal inspectors; they take that just as serious as someone getting ripped off. I have received items that were restricted delivery in the past, and even though I'm over 40, my I.D. was checked.

My opinion doesn't really matter anyway; you made that quite clear in the past, so we'll just leave it at that.

I was tempted by the Busse Battle Mistress but....

-It would be hard for me to conform my schedule to the passaround. Work and school take up alot of my time, and I don't often get a chance to go out and "use" a knife.

THEY F***ing SUCK

I imagine its basically going to be a major rip off scam shortly
Hell the winners are usually the ones who start the passaround or somebodys friend WOW
imagine that?

Get a 400 dollar folder for 10 bucks such a deal

THEY ARE a scam

thats my deal on them

Well LE, with 12 post behind your handle I'd say your qualified to present such an eloquent opinion, don't trash what ya don't know.

I've participated and the lotto is legit, read the posts before rendering such a unfounded opinion.

By the way welcome to the forums, I look forawrd to more of your replies.:)

Leathal Edge how can you fix the California State lottery?? If we had that power, I doubt we would worry about a $400 knife

As far as the raffle passarounds go. Steven Roos, the organizer of them has never won.

Read before you type pal  :barf:
