If you only had one knife lineup......................

I agree with all of those who said to wait until your initial training is over. When you know where and what your first assignment is you will be better able to assess your needs based on what you will be doing and where you are stationed. Thanks for your willingness to serve.

I'd take a Victorinox Soldier and a Victorinox Farmer and decide then and there which one to take with me.
A Multitool can't hurt either.
All the best.

It would be the MOD that I did on an original Sheffield that I did on a British Military Ministry of Defense knife. It would be my go to knife.

If you want to take an RMD put your order in about a month before you head off to basic and you might acutally have it by the time basic is done. If it were me there is no way id take anything from Busse while they are very tough they are extremely heavy. My fixed choice would be an ESEE-3 mil. Its tough enough for hard use, easy to sharpen in the field, not terribly expensive, and comes with a ton of ways to carry the knife. For a pocket knife you really cant go wrong with Strider but this would be expensive and a target for stealing so my choice here would either be a Spyderco PM2 if you wanted a nice tough slicer or a Cold Steel American Lawman if you want a tough beat it to peices folder. A multitool is a must as well. For this I would simply find which is most comfortable in your hand and go with that.

First thank you for deciding to serve. I am a disabled vet myself and i am very thankful to the other members of the armed forces. 2nd it looks like your in canada? i wasnt aware they had a military per say, and thought you guys were to nice EH? :) joke :)

Next you cant go wrong with a ka-bar, the military has used them for many years with good reason. 2nd i love me my swamp rat ratmandu, 3rd a multi-tool will be very functional.

A Winkler Belt Knife will probably go to my grave with me I use it over pretty much anything in the field, even over my SWATMANDU. For military, I would say one of Dan Winkler's SAR's. If seeing some CQB is a possibility, a stout dagger, or double edged knife like a spartan blades V14. I would say a Tomahawk would also do a great job in place of a knife? RMJ Jenny Wren or Pathfinder? Or a Winkler Combat axe? But as other folks are saying when deployed to theater unless you are absolutely able to keep track of your 300 dollar high end blade or 500-800 dollar hawk, I would instead buy a dependable Esee that will serve you well and is expendable at the same time. Tops/Beckers is also a good choice that does not break break the bank.

Op asked this question in 2012, I'm pretty sure he is well into his enlistment and already made his knife choices. Just saying.

None. Wait until you've finished with Boot Camp, have your Trades Training under your belt, and then you'll have a better idea of what you're going to need. Best to not bring your own personal effects to Basic Training (you ought to 'sterilize' the contents of your wallet too!) You'll most like just have to put it in lock-up anyway where it runs the risk of being stolen. Sad but true.

Best of luck, OP! :)

Bet advise yet I think. It would only get stolen in lockup if you didn't get pushed into a panic attack and throw it in an amnesty box like my daughter did with her SAK...

off topic-but the topic was a bump from yrs ago anyway. Im from signal mountain. Was an awesome Opossum in elementary and went to signal mtn middle. Signal Mtn has grown so much...I remember when all there was was one stop light and I thought Hardees was a pretty big deal.

SAK Tinker/Super Tinker or Farmer.
Back when I was in, everybody carried a Buck 110 on their belt (sometimes with the issue fixed blade on their belt, as well.) The 110 is still a good choice.

A "super steel" in a field situation would not be the best. You want something that is easy to maintain and does not require special equipment, for example, diamond sharpening stones, to maintain the edge.

Well I'm long out of the military but I'm an LEO and if I had to bring something for an extended mission I'd take my:

Leatherman wave
Strider Sng
Big Chris customs SAR/camp knife in 3v.

I'd likely replace the Sng with a big Chris personal EDC fixed blade in s90v but the Sng would be good.

This guy is correct. Depending upon where you are posted, the rules that permit/specify what is/is not allowed WILL change from one place to another. Wait until you get there. PX prices will be cheaper, anyway.
Thank you for your planned service to our country.

Well, he's serving my country, actually. But we usually just follow your military around anyway (with one notable exception)... :) He's probably an officer by now. Who keeps bumping these threads? ;)

Leatherman Wave, or even a Leatherman MUT for a multitool. Then I'd go for an Emerson folder of your choice as an EDC/utility knife. I wouldn't bother getting a large fixed blade, you'll never use it and you'll probably be issued one anyway.

A multi-blade Victorinox SAK. I found that to be the best all around knife to have in the Army. I'd suggest a Pioneer or Farmer. Almost any scout pattern will be just as good.

A multi-tool for everything BUT the knife blade it has.

And lastly a cheap but TOUGH fixed blade. I carried a Glock M81 Field knife in my ruck.

I am not .mil, and this thread has been gone over multiple times, but I would go with

Leatherman Wave
Spyderco PM2 or DPx Hest/F

If I were actually a grunt or an engineer, I'd take a Bk7 as well

Folders: ZT 301, Benchmade Adamas 275, Emerson Super Commander

Fixed: Benchmade Nimravus, Spartan Blades Ares Combat, DPx H.E.F.T. 6

Multi-Tool: Leatherman Mut, Leatherman Charge TTi, Leatherman OHT

Personally I would take the ZT, Spartan and Mut

I need to start looking at the dates :D

Theft is a big issue on bases, so definitely don't go crazy on cost. A leatherman Wave, a Spyderco Manix and a $50-$100 fixed blade would work perfect. A Becker or ESEE in the 4-5" size will pack well.
