If you only had one knife lineup......................

Multi tools are issued so no need to buy one. I still have half a dozen various issue multi tools laying around. Hard to sharpen steels will be a no go if you're a grunt, go for the toughest you can get. You are going to break your folder, so get a tough one and take a few. Fixed blades need to be as dumb as they get with a strong steel that you can sharpen on a rock and straighten the edge on a M2 barrel with. When you need ammo and the ammo is in crates on top of the ICV it's quicker to pop the metal by prying than twisting it open with a multi tool, and you will do that plenty unless you are chow hall guard or a water purification specialist. My fixed blade mostly opened crates of ammo fast, cut a bunch of watermelons, killed a goat so we could eat it and a bunch of mundane tasks. I tried a SOG seal pup for a couple weeks but that thing had steel like an aluminum blade and was even the Seki blade. So the Glock knife went back on and the seal pup was given to a mechanic who would never need to use it.

Both replaceable, useful, incredibly tough, lovely things they are!

I can not recommend these two enough! Spyderco Pacific Salt and Leatherman Wave.

Being in a combat situation unless your in the navy and even then the H1 is useless.

Theft on base also depends on how well you take care of your things. If you leave stuff laying around then well.. I wouldn't leave it to chance. You should always have some kind of locker with a lock on it.. If I remember they still make you do that in basic or boot camp.

Multi tool.
Heavy duty folder.
Heavy duty fixed blade with 6-8 inch blade and a QUALITY sheath.
You just need to pick the makers. Good luck.

And the deadthreads still stalk these foums... ghosts ask knifey questions from beyond the veil... or Canada, maybe.

DPX Heft 6
This knife is my new pack knife and has replaced my ESSE 4. I would recommend this knife especially if weight is an issue. This is a medium-large blade however it weighs around the same as the ESSE 4. Also very rugged and well built.

If I was in your line of work this would be my first choice, and to go with it, probably a multitool.

I'd bring a Zero tolerance 350, swamp rat ratmandu, and a paramilitary 2. But it would be nice to have a leatherman wave

Wait until your first duty station. Then get stuff that is light, cheap, and easy to replace. Weight is always an issue when you are in the field. At least it was for me.

I carried CRKT products most of the time I was in. They're cheap, I would consider them again. Or, I would carry some sort of MT (Leatherman Wave, Gerber 600, etc). I would also consider a Gerber CLS, or a Vic 08 Soldier. On the lighter side, an Alox SAK would be nice.

I remember when they started getting Multi-Tools in the supply chain. Replaced the old "Demo" knife which was nothing more than a cheap copy of Vic Soldier or Pioneer. We thought the MT was pretty cool. You guys have nice gear compared to when I served.
