If you see a pocket clip, do you stop the guy?

Hell yeah. I was vvending food in Maryland this weekend and I saw quite a lot of clips. Mostly garbage, but I asked a few guys what they were carrying when I thought it might be something good, and saw some nice blades from the general populace. Among the list, I saw and talked to guys with:

Mini CQC-15
Spyderco Vallotton
Endura
Manix 2
ZT 0350
940
Griptillian
Leek
HK Auto

And the weird part? None of these guys were Forumites or serious enthusiasts or anything. Just casual users that happened to pick up a nice blade. The guy with a Valloton said he collected knives, but that he didn't belong to any forums. A few people seemed surprised that a kid like me knew about sharp pointy things and was carrying an orange Military. Oh yeah, there was also a guy with a Fenix TK15 which I thought was cool. Anyway, good day for me. :)

I would probably not approach people to ask what they have in their pockets. Around here, that's going to be an instant "Mind your $%^&ing business" response. I have to say I'd be instantly wary of anyone asking me.

If you see a gun-butt printing through a guy's shirt, do you ask him what he's carrying?

I can't say that I would have asked them what they were carrying. I would have been satisfied with the fact that they were actually carrying a knife. Although, I will admit I do get curious whenever I see a pocket clip...

Sorry to hear that! Whenever I do it I usually have a pleasant conversation with whoever I asked.

My job is to bag groceries at a Grocery Store, and have actually took the time to conduct some tests, this is a good time to share my results...
My register checks out on average 25 costumers per hour, on average I see 2 knives on a person every two hours. Surprisingly I see more people carrying knives on Sundays, I do not understand why that could be but it is really interesting.
So here are my results:

10 checkout lanes= 25 costumers per hour=on average 2 blades every two hours...
**So on an average 8 hour work day: We have 2,000 people check-out groceries, 80 of them have noticeable blades on them
If my calculations are correct: ≥6.25% of costumers who shop at my job are carrying VISIBLE knives. I thought you folks would find that interesting

I dunno, maybe. It depends on the person. I would never ask a woman if she was carrying a knife because that might be awkward for various reasons. If the guy wasn't busy with something else and didn't seem as though his attention was required for a matter at hand, then maybe.

Funny stuff, man. I actually started a similar thread a few months back and got some interesting responses.

I'll make a judgement call and if the dude seems approachable, I'll ask what they've got.

In SoCal theres about 4 people who carry knives, so good luck

But the good thing about that, is that the ones who ARE carrying, are usually like minded knife knuts. Ive only met a couple. No one around here carries "just because". Its not considered very normal where I live, so those that do carry, are usually pretty IN when it comes to knives

Sure i'll ask people if I notice. It's all about how you ask. I'm not going to say "hey what's in your pockets?" but rather "what kind of knife is that?" or if you really wan't to be nice "Just wondering what kind of knife that is if you don't mind."

I never really asked. When I used to clip my knife to my front jeans pocket, a guy or two would ask what knife I had and often would show me his knife as well.

On the other hand, if it was a police officer asking me what knife I had clipped to my jeans, he was more interested in why I had one rather than what brand I liked.

Not my experience. Not at ALL. Los Angeles is stock full of exposed pocket clips and even a few sheaths. This past week alone: spydie, microtech auto (not legal, but not exactly strictly enforced), Kershaw Leek, SOG, sebenza. And all of them in bars and restaurants. (If I had gone to a gun shop or something, they would have been everywhere, but this is in the "liberal" west side, and knives here are quite popular.

I'm one of em :)

It might be late but....

If you have 25 customers an hour. And you see 2 knifes every 2 hours. That means 1 knife per hour. And with 25 customers an hours that's 1 over 25. Or 1/25. that's equals 0.04. Or 4%.

So 4% of your customers carried a noticeable knife.

No?

Cool man. Im just relating my personal findings. Im situated in the northernmost Pasadena area, so I dont see many people with knives. Heck, where I am, even the gun shop has a restriction in place that says their employees cant carry knives.......I havent payed close enough attention to the customers to notice if they were carrying though.....
