If you see a pocket clip, do you stop the guy?

I don't ask because most I see around here are crap anyway. I've given up on the fantasy of asking some dude what he's carrying and it turns out to be a Sebenza or something and he's on bladeforums, etc. I don't get asked what I'm carrying, ever.

Blasphemy!

WTF kind of crap is that. :thumbdn:

I know right? And I only know this cuz I offered an employee my knife when I saw him struggling to open a package with a "company issued pen", as he called it.......needless to say, he wasnt too happy either

I dunno, maybe. It depends on the person. I would never ask a woman if she was carrying a knife because that might be awkward for various reasons. If the guy wasn't busy with something else and didn't seem as though his attention was required for a matter at hand, then maybe.

I don't think we're talking about asking IF people carry a knife. It's noticing a knife clip and asking which make. I think it's aces to interact with people who obviously have similar interests. Wish somebody would ask me!

I wouldn't ask upon just seeing a clip.

Sometimes if a person has their knife out and handling it I might inquire...depends on the situation.

my own knifes are in my pocket not clipped to it .iam mostly harmless and wish to appear so.that being said in a fight a knife is better felt than seen

I see clips in pockets once in awhile. I always try to see if it's anything worth asking about, but it always appears to be something cheap so I let it go. Who wants to listen to somebody go on about how great their cheapo folder is anyway? The one time I did ask it was a girl working at a gas station and she whipped out a folding cheap box cutter.

HK Auto in Maryland an showing it off? Good way for a year in jail and/or $50 to $500 fine. (Yes, autos are legal to own but not sell or carry. Unless a LEO or MIL or a rare carry permit holder.) When people ask what I'm carrying I just tell them it's a tool.

Aside from the larger urban areas, most people in Texas carry a knife. Not a big deal here and no one thinks to comment on it.

I hardly ever notice anyone carrying a knife here in Dallas. I've had people eyeball my pocket clip warily more than a few times. Lots of folks are moving here from knife-unfriendly places, I'm afraid.

I was just in dallas ft worth area, and I noticed almost every cowboy i saw had a leather pouch for a slip joint or buck on his belt. Not alot of pocket clips, but i saw a ton of traditional folders. Id ask if I saw a clip i thought belonged to a higher end knife. Especially if it looks like a deep carry clip. If someone tells you to mind thier own business, say sorry was just trying to be conversational as i collect knives. And if I saw a pistol being open carried yes i do ask what they have. Most guys just go.....oh glock 21. Granted if it was a glock i wouldnt have to ask, but older revolvers or modern 1911 can have lots of variants.

Yep, Dallas, Houston, and Austin are exceptions to the rule. Austin is probably the least knife-friendly of the three. Also the most liberal.

I live on the Fort Worth side of the DFW metroplex and you rarely see a jean pocket without a clip.

If I see a clip that is unfamiliar to me or is from a knife that I have not handled, I will ask.
Of course, if I know it's junk I won't bother.

At a recent BBQ I saw a 10 yr old boy proudly carrying a small neck knife with micarta handle scales.
He was not waving it about or acting stabby. Just a kid carrying a knife.

Small piece of low carbon, hand filed, micarta scales hand pinned to the tang. Suede sheath with a retention snap on a leather lace.
Rather crude, but decent F & F.
After talking to him a while I found out he had made it himself.
He had guidance, but it was a good job for a 10yr old.

How can you learn from or meet new people that possibly have the same interests as yourself without talking to them?

No - I don't stop strangers asking what they have clipped to them.

I have asked people that I have had to deal with; people in meetings at my office etc.; however most of the time they have a leatherman or a Jarbenza.

If I notice a clip and the guy seems to be a decent sort, I'll usually ask if that's a Spyderco or something like that just to initiate the conversation. And I've always had a pleasant conversation. I don't do this with everyone I see, just now and then. Here in Nebraska, there are more people with clips showing than not it seems.

I don't bother talking with the obvious mall ninja guys, although I'm sure some of them are decent enough guys. Just usually don't have the patience. Lol.

I have asked people who were providing some service for me, ie. mechanic, someone giving me estimates on new windows, ect. Never just a random person though.

I seriously debated asking a guy I saw not too long ago but decide not too. Funny thing is I've thought about this encounter multiple times since it happened, and then I see this thread. Living in rural GA, clips or sheaths are not uncommon. I just wish knife shops were as common as the pocket clips are.

Only when I see a familiar clip.
I stop and talk if I can tell it's a real one.
I've talked to benchmade owners, and Spyderco owners.

I've asked a couple of fellas, I guess. Only men that I'm interacting with for some other reason. I wouldn't ask a random stranger.

Waiting for the bus last week, I saw a guy at the bus stop with a pocket clip showing.
Then I noticed the Aryan Brotherhood and Swastika thing shaved into his hair...
Not clubbing him to the ground taxed my limits of politeness...and I figured I didn't need to know what such a fool carried anyway.

So no, I didn't ask.
