I voted 3" because that is the closest to the few I really EDC. One is slightly longer, a Cripple Creek single bladed barlow, and two are shorter, Case SBJ and a Case Peanut, both in stainless.

I went with 3 1/4. Both my old Buck cadet and tinker are 3 1/4, and I think that's what the old Schrade middleman jack was. Handy size for a do everything pocket slicer, yet both have the smaller blades for the fine work.

Right on all points. And, agreed. Great size for EDC.

3 1/8 for me, because it is the size of my fav. an most carryed EDC the victorinox recruit

I appreciate all the participation on this one guys:thumbup: Thankfully we aren't confined to one size, but I find the responses to this hypothetical question very interesting:)

3.5" is my favorite. I do carry between 3.25 and 3.75 on a regular basis. Anthing bigger is to much for my pockets.

I went with 3 3/8 as that ought to result in a blade almost but not quite 3 inches long. Blade length is an important consideration to me--more important than how much room it takes up in my pocket.

3 3/4. Smallest enough for the front pocket and big enough to handle everyday tasks

I voted for 3 1/2". It's big enough for most tasks without being too bulky in the pocket. Most of my folders are about that size.

Well, I went 3-7/8" to be consistant with my answer to a similar poll on another forum recently; 'what pattern for the rest of your life' in which I chose peanut... and a peanut is 2-7/8"

I was tempted to go 3" since I am trying to find a congress around that size to carry for a while, and that would cover me if the congress actually upstages the peanut as a overall favorite... but that has yet to happen, still a distant 'IF' so i stayed true to my current knowing and went with the peanut size.

I love my 8OT and my Large Case knives, thus the 3 7/8 is my go to choice for only 1 size.

I voted for over 4".

My main slip joint EDC's are, Large Stockmans, Trappers & Folding Hunters.

Interesting question and interesting curve. I expected a normal bell-curve distribution on this with a clear center average. Instead we have two peaks. It seems most folks center around 3-1/2" as ideal, but there's another peak at 4". Those folks like or need big and aren't afraid to carry it.

The guy I buy dress clothes from tells me his most popular sizes are "M" and "XXL". Similar thing, people tend to like a certain size, and if they go beyond that size, they jump up a few sizes.

I wonder if knife-size preference is related to clothes? Dress/casual clothes accommodate up to about a 3-1/2" knife, while work clothes will easily go 4" or larger.

Myself, I have centered around 3-1/4" as ideal for me. It's the size my grandpa carried (I have his Henckels stockman). Most of my knife use is cutting down cardboard for recycling, and this size gives me enough blade to do it, while still keeping the blade nice and thin, so that when the edge dulls, the geometry still lets me cut efficiently. I normally like 2 blades, but in this size I find I don't mind 3 at all.

I do carry many different sizes, from 2-7/8" Peanut (have 2) up to just under 4", and I love them all and they all have their uses. But if I had to have only one size as a "do-it-all" size, 3-1/4" would be it.

Good question.

I've believed for a while now that the way a person dresses, what kind of clothing they wear most of the time, has a big influence on what they carry. The different styles of clothes reflect different job environments, as well as lifestyles. Business, business casual, and outright casual are totally different things. What will carry well in jeans or work clothes will not be the same as dockers, let alone dress pants.
