If you were to have only one knife, then what weight???

I nominated the Steel Heart as a generic size with respect to length, not thickness, which I figure is more a matter of personal taste.

You Heavy Heart fanatics need to learn the joy of ThINFI!

Well Rick maybe you can make believers out of the non believers by offering up your "Puzzle Heart" in a passaround.

I'm with you all the way as I would take my SHSH Bowie Variant .200 thick.
Bottom one is this pic.

One knife?

Ergo Steel Heart or a HH/HOG FSH. The Ergo SH is the most versitile knife in my opinion.

If I could only take one it would be the SFNO (substitue the Camp Tramp and save a few ounces).

If I could take two it would be the AD + FSH combo (substitute the SS4 and Satin Battle Rat and save a few ounces).

... I just got a Busse Basic 9 and that would work just as well.....I went for the FSH because it is better steel....but only slightly.....if I could afford a SHBM which I have handled....I would go for that. That old design has the size and weight perfect for me. Jnphares has a great one in artic white which I would strip and use if it were mine...it's the only one I have handled but it was memorably sweet!

I was thinking either SHBM or Basic 9 - the Basic 9 offers a long blade with a lighter weight (about 2/3 if I remember correctly) compared to the SHBM. A Steel Heart would be a good choice too.

Don't worry about the Mod-INFI in the Basic 9 - it is for all *practical* purposes as good as regular INFI. There was a thread years ago that talked about the well over 2000 (2700+ ?) pieces of rope cut during a demo with a Basic 9 - the knife did not stop cutting, they ran out of rope!

Yes, between a Basic 9 and a FSH or a SHBM you have that ideal weight/speed balance. Very hard to pick one from these three.....although in fairness I have'nt got a SHBM. I might sell a few knives to get one though.....might as well have an expensive "user" than a lot of lesser expensive second choices...

I would love to get hold of a Basic 9 to try out. I don't really do grail knives but if I did, the Basic 9 (along with an AK, Arrgone Assault 2007, ABA-LE and the soon-to-be Khukri) would be right up there!

I've just picked up (delivered about an hour ago) a Fallkniven A2, probably not too far away from the Basic 9 I would imagine. Feels great; balanced well, fast, but heavy enough to chop. Makes me want a B9 even more!

I think a Steel Heart flat ground from .25" stock would make a good general purpose knife, but I'd greatly prefer the BAD / FBM combo.

The Fallkniven A2, while a GREAT knife.....it isn't near the same league as the Basic 9. Same Sport......but not same league.

Again, go heavy. While a leatherman would be a great accompany tool, I certainly wouldn't rely on the blade.

I would even pick a FFBM ......large heavy blade has 1001 uses other than cutting. Something with a thick edge that won't damage as easy as a thin one.....you can pry with it, hammer with it, brace things, smash items with the spine.....

After 4 years in the Service and countless months spent in "The Field" and my time in Iraq. I NEVER complained about the weight of my gear. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Hey! Great response from your guys.

There seems to be a preference to larger blades (8-10 in) and medium large (6-8 in).
SHBM (10in) weight?
NMSFNO (8in) weight?
SHSH (7.5in) weight?
SFNO (7in) weight?

Which seem to go against the choice of what is considered the norm (4-6in). Personally I like the medium large as well. But...

If anyone of you guys have got scales, can you measure the weights of your choice. (in ounces) It would be interesting to see what your prepared to carry. (It's a shame this info isn't on the collectors pages).

Just out of interest, no one has mention the CG Ash1 (6.5in 20.7 oz), a good short chopper. Too heavy for it's length?

Yeah, you did ask for weight...

Just weighed my Heavy Heart (8.25" blade, 14.5" overall) at 669g or 23.5oz

Not sure that's it's the weight I would 'want' as such, which is what you asked, it's just the weight of the knife I would want. Certainly I don't have a problem with the weight though. I've never been a lightweight sort of guy. I backpacked the Pennine Way in England (that's about 250 miles) carrying a 100 litre Berghause Vulcan sack weighing in at somewhere over 70 lbs. Knives carried included an Al Mar Pathfinder combat machete. Not sure what that weighs but it's more than the Heavy Heart!

CG ASH-1 - too short really for a 'one-knife' scenario, for me anyway. And yes, too heavy for its size when I can have a bigger knife of similar weight. That said:

I have a special use for my HOG-ASH (CG ASH-1). It's my 'Get Home' knife. Like a bug-out but in reverse. It lives in my work bag which is a big IBM laptop bag. The bag is always with me, around the country, containing the tools of the trade of a network engineer (laptop, few cables, multimeter, cable crimper, screwdrivers etc) and some basic urban survival needs. Just in case something silly happens (like a terrorist bomb, building fire, road accident, snow storm). It's always with me when I'm working; rarely more than a room away.

So really, my one knife is the CG ASH-1. The reason it's not the heavy heart is simply that the HH doesn't quite fit in the bag as well as the ASH.

Rick , send me yours to try out and I might reconsider my choice.:D

but as you are aware the HH is between the thin standard Fsh, and the HO FSH which IMHO makes it the better choice for an all arounder.
