I'm a gear junky for ...?

Apparently I'm a sleeping pad junkie. I have 4 different options. Air mattress, closed cell pad, REI Lite-core 1.5, Exped Syn-mat 9 Deluxe.

Sense I've been doing TSR, I've changed what I look for in gear now.

Im not so into the knives now, but the gear. Navagation, signaling, and the platforms to carry it. I was out yesterday for hours, and ended up traveling over 60 miles on river looking for someone, I was glad I had a vest, and not the lunada.

My other addiction is music. Guitars in general...ive thinned the heard WAY back...used to have 10 guitars and 6 amps..

That and guns...damn...my wallet shivers everytime i walk into a guitar or sporting goods store

-hunting gear/guns/bows
-knives
-packs
-misc backpacking and survival gear

I'm definitely a geardo :)

Mine is sort of a funny one...I have an obsession with just plain being GEARED. I guess it's my survivalist nature. But I don't obsess over packs, or knives, or guns, per se. What I obsess over is the whole deal. I need to find the gun that I want as my primary, and the one I want as my back up. Then I want three or four identical ones.

Then I need to find the ideal pack. I lay out my specific needs on paper, and over the course of a month or two, I figure out exactly what I need that pack to look like. Then I go buy it. So far I have not had a need for multiples of packs, though.

Then I will do a jacket.

Then I will do a bicycle.

Then I will do a vehicle.

Then I will do a knife.

Then I will do binoculars.

And it just goes on and on forever. I have some pretty killer gear as a result, though! I figure by the time I am 40 I will be ready for absolutely anything, and spend the rest of my life disappointed as nothing cool ever happens.

Packs for me too, I am currently on the quest to find the right ONE since funds are limited and I can't buy one in each size group. Have been through the progression from Jansport and Quicksilver, to Camelbak, to Maxpedition. Just tried on and ordered an Osprey Kestrel 38, so we'll see if the search takes a break there :) My other interest has to be flashlights

Bikes. Mountain bikes and vintage road bikes.

I have raced mountain bikes on and off, and been an avid rider since I was 9.

Heres my newest one Ill be racing this year. Just finished it yesterday!

Daypacks for me. I've probably got in the realm of a dozen packs, all sizes and shapes. I go through stages where I want a smaller pack, then transition to a larger one.

Right now, I am getting ready for hiking with my new Mountainsmith lumbar pack. It's my first really substantial sized lumbar pack, and I'm pretty excited about trying it out. I really like my Mountainsmith daypack, so I'm expecting similar success with the lumbar pack.

You know another thing I just thought of: I am obsessed with efficient use of space. Which is pretty funny if you ever see my absolute wreck of a house! There are parts for fifty different machines strewn everywhere and enough OD cordura to outfit a small army...plus you can't open a drawer without finding 200 rounds for something or other...

But anyway any building with an extremely efficient layout fascinates me. I have this absolute obsession with green architecture and sustainable construction so any time I see something like a really well-thought-out cabin or intelligently designed teardrop trailer etc I have to mentally beat myself in to submission before I start building one. It does not remotely matter if I have space for it or not, or any use for it.

So what I do is go through pads and pads of graph paper, designing buildings to make use of space in the most efficient manner possible. I impose different constraints on them: only passive solar heating, for example, or "must house 4 adults + skis for 4 days comfortably in 150 square feet" or things like that.

What I REALLY want to do is build every idea, but I force myself instead to just make drawings or scale models in some cases.

It's not exactly gear junkiism but it's close, and it feels the same from the inside. You would not believe how many books I have on the subjects of green architecture, alternative energy, log construction...

That looks good Jake...congrats. I always found the worst thing about finishing a bike was it made me start thinking about building the next. :o

For some reason I didn't even think about listing bikes, I'm definitely a bike junkie. Not long ago I had 7 road bikes, 4 MTBs and 3 frames waiting to be built. I've reduced that by 3 so far and hopefully a 4th soon.

I know what you mean......:o

The Surly was my first frame up build...Went good! It rides like a dream. Something about steel, and 1 gear... Ya know whats bad? The label on the front tire isnt centered over the valve stem like the rear and its drivin me nuts... Gonna have to fix that.. Damn OCD...

I wanted to use the nukeproof set on this bike, but the tires I used are waay fat, and the hoops are a little narrow. Im gonna use em on the wifeys bike though..

Im already gathering parts to build a budget mountain bike for my wifey, and I have a sweet vintage Dyno VFR BMX frame waitin to be built for my 8yr old..

There's a reason they say 'steel is real'. I'm the same way bout the labels so don't feel bad. I use the excuse that I need it that way so I can find a hole in the tube easier...I can orient the tube to the tire. :D

I noticed the Nuke's weren't on there. I bet they'd have worked OK and would have just given the tires a more 'round' profile. I have a wheelset with way old school Bontrager rims that were cut-down and rerolled road rims (I think the outside width is 19mm) and I've never had a problem with tires on them. Still, the wife will have a good set of wheels. Sounds like a cool bike for your son too. How's the Motobecane working out for you?

Yeah, Im thinking they will be perfect for her. With the amount of hucking, and drops I ride, I think I would have broke the carbon hubs ridin full a full rigid bike...Just couldnt risk it on such a sweet set of vintage wheels from a company that is no more...:( Plus, I am soon goin tubeless with disc brakes on a dedicated singlespeed hub....

Im putin a nice set of narrower trail tires on a frame with front suspension fork for her, I think they will be great and last her forever!!

The motobecane is flat cool. Damn streets here arent made for bikers, I already broke 2 spokes. No biggie, easy fix. The weinmen rims are pretty stout. Its a great cruiser, that has saved me alot of $$ on gas just runnin errands on it. Im gonna add a nice rack to it, and update the brake levers soon... Ill snap some pics of it tommarow..

I'm a Junky too:p At first I was hooked on Blades but now I'm trying to slow down on the knife purchases & leaning more into Packs, I need a good daypack, I have a few different Cheapies but I'm looking for a good DayPack @ a decent Price...If thats possible:rolleyes:
So I guess you can say I'm a Blade & Pack Junkie :D

Aside from knives, I am not really a junky for much. Stoves though, they are my one weak point. They are all home-made, so cost isnt a big deal, but having a closet full of paint-can and coffee-tin stoves is a little odd. i think i made my perfect one today though. It is wood burning, really small, cooks reasonable fast, and once i but the chimeney material, i will be able to heat an enclosed shelter with it. plus, it only costed me about three dollars and some of the spare harware i keep in the garage.

but that is pretty much the extent of it. I have restricted myself from getting into flashlights. i like them, but i dont want to get sucked in and waste alot of money. So, i have one picked out, and i will just get that one and then, hopefully, get by with just that one for most things (it is the fenix L2D by the way).

Packs seem like they would be fun, but i havent gotten into them either (probably for the better). other than my school bag, i dont own a backpack. I should probably get one for hiking and stuff, but ,again, i dont want to get sucked in and end up buying like 50 packs or anything, so it is probably best to avoid picking one out. I have been eying those duluths for a long time though.

I have alot of music gear, but i got what i need and i havent bought anything for that in department for a couple of years. Realistically, i could get by with just my acoustic guitar, since that is really all that i play anyway.

I can see myself getting sucked into the knife making and leatherworking gear. I was browsing a leatherworking site the other day, just going to get a few supplies, and now i have $50 worth of stuff i want. Between blades, woods, spacers and fitting, i have alot of knife making stuff that i want too. I shoud probably get a job before i get too carried away though.......

Packs.
Seems one of the things I love the most is finding new ways to pack everything. I'll buy something I don't even want if it comes in a cool bag.

It's a little like treasure hunting, too. I'll go spelunking into one of my closets, digging through old packs and bags and find stuff packed in them I thought was lost forever, or didn't even know I had. Just last January I found a brand new (tags still on) M65 field jacket in an old Air Force crew bag in one of my hardly used closets. This just after I bought a new Carhartt bomber jacket (the M65 is warmer). . .

I'm a gear junky for ice climbing tools.
Here's my now using gears, only a small part of the accumulation .

For me, I tend to collect unusual guns with the outdoors in mind. I also like belt pouches and have so many lying around it's almost ridiculous. Another thing is survival/outdoor books and videos. I have a whole set of bookshelves dedicated to those! :)

Im pretty bad for my watches, lights and pens. I have a few other things I have more than I need of but those 3 are the main runners up to my knives.

:)

I've started to get into watches, very bad for the wallet. Knives still win over watches though. I've always been a bit of a "gear queer" when it comes to "tactical gear" as the masses say now, more out of necessity but I can't deny my attraction to all kinds of nylon goodness. I won't show all my stuff (I have a lot of gear...) but here's a textbook case:

Nothing is stock. The base is a GI MOLLE belt stripped off of an ILBE. That had the nylon belt cut out and replaced with an Eagle Industries Duty Belt. Then there are two Diamondback Tactical Nalgene pouches on the front (4 in mags each instead of Nalgene bottle on occasion, Spec Ops brand light pouch and a GI single mag pouch), High Speed Gear GP pouch with old-school ALICE 3mag pouch slapped on, DBT 2qt canteen pouch with an aftermarket drinking hose for the canteen, GI M-14 mag pouch converted to FAK, finally a multitool pouch from County Comm up front. The suspenders are Blackhawk as is the detachable 3-day pack.
