Hi guys. Im a newbie. Ive always wanted to buy a spyderco for EDC but didnt have the dough to spare. I dont even know a lot about spydies except that they're the best in the market on account of what I read in defense forums. I now have cash to spare and visited a store today. They showed me a Delica 4 but I postponed the purchase so I could research some more. And thats how I found this site. Im now confused on what to get for my first Spydie. I wont be collecting knives or something so I need my first spydie (and maybe only spydie) to be multi-purpose as possible i.e defense and utility but also for Everyday carry. I need your suggestions.I definitely NEED a spyderco Knife in my pocket tomorrow. :) Thanks a lot and more power to you guys. :)

You cannot go wrong with either the Delica or the Endura, depending upon the size of the knife that you wish to carry or that the law allows you to carry. Another option would be to go over to Wal-Mart and see if they have any of the S30V Natives that Spyderco is supplying to them. The Native is a wonderful knife.

You CAN'T go wrong with the Delica, But it's entirely up to you! What fits best in your hand, what blade length, style do you prefer, Plain edge or Spyder-edge....

Go to the store, and handle all of them. You will know which one feels right.

Fair Warning---Once you buy one, you WILL want (I mean LUST for) More!!!!

Delica, Endura, Native are all reasonably priced user knives.

I got a Native for a few years, and would get my vote, but I've also tried the other 2, and are both great. Just can't justify get 3 EDCs.

Thanks for the reply sherlockbonez,Mav,gkruty, and fullerH. Makes me feel at home right away. Im in the Philippines and we have a few selections here (far as I Know) We have no legal limitations as to length of blade so long as you dont brandish it infront of people's faces. As of now, price is not a problem. Im kind of inclined with the Delica 4 PE or the Caly3 (read great reviews.). I think I saw a Millie too but dont quite know bout the Native. am i on the right track about the Caly3?

The Delica and Native are both classics! If you only get one, I recommend a combo edge as it is two blades in one!

The Caly3 is a great knife. Take a look at the forums section of Spyderco.com - there are some excellent reviews there. If you are looking to spend in the price range of the Caly3, I have a few other suggestions for you though.

Typically, I tell first time Spyder buyers to start off with an Endura (or a Delica if blade length laws apply). That way you get a taste for what Spyderco is all about. However, if you want to jump right in and spend the big bucks (cuz a Caly3 will cost you twice as much as an Endura), go right ahead. Spyderco offers some great products.

The Caly3 is a nice knife, but before you spend that kind of cash, take a look at some reviews/ pictures of a few others:

Paramilitary
Military
Manix or Mini-Manix

Just go to the Spyderco.com forums, go to search, search advanced, titles only, and type in the names.

Happy Hunting!

:D

Thanks Nickzac. How do you feel about the lava? would it work as a self defense knife and utility too? All the replies are really getting me excited. cant wait to go to the store tomorrow.

The Lave is very well designed and one of the most ergonomic knives on the market. For SD, I generally recommend a larger blade, but it grips so well that it could indeed be effective.

will do that and thanks guys!! Ill keep you posted and even send pictures.

Caly III or the Delica, or both; one for your left side pockets, one for your right side pockets. :)
Let us know what you decide.

Blades

IF you plan on digging or prying you'll want a native, but I know first hand that if you want to flatten a couple of hundred of boxes, the straighter edge of a endure will be better.

I agree, you can't go wrong with an Endura or Delica, they haven't been in Spyderco's lineup for 15+ years for no reason...

Personally, i find the Native's ergos too cramped for me, but it *is* a nice knife, i just don't care for it

Depending on your shop's inventory, i'd reccomend a PE Delica for your first Spydie, it's large enough to be useful, but not unweildly, and it's short enough to not scare all but the most paranoid sheeple

if your store has it, i *highly* reccomend the Waved Delica or Endura, you get great VG-10 steel, and a very cool and addictive opening system, for your *next* Spydie (oh believe me, you *will* buy more, Spydies are addictive...) go for the SE British Racing Green Delica in ZDP-189

either way, after your first Spydie purchase, i reccomend not purchasing any more Spydies until you get a Sharpmaker, you'll want to be able to retain that Scary-Sharp factory edge, and the Sharpmaker makes it easy, almost brainless to do so

the SM is best described as a "maintenance" tool, it's not the best for restoring a badly ignored, dulled edge, you're best off with benchstones for that, but the SM *excels* at maintaining the edge, just give the blade a couple quick swipes on the white stones after every few days of use, the best way to keep knives sharp is to never let them get dull in the first place....

once you've got sharpening down (start off on somne cheapo beaters first) and can maintain the edge of your first Spydie, whatever it turns out to be, then you can go crazy, full-bore into this addictive hobby

at some point, you'll need to try a Hawkbill blade, either a Harpy or Tasman Salt, then you'll *really* get addicted.....

ZDP-189 is a high end Japanese steel that is very hard and holds an edge longer than the standard VG-10

i'd second the waved Endura or Delica

ZDP-189 is the newest, most popular Übersteel in the Spyderco line, i just started using a ZDP Delica today, so i don't have hard data, but it supposedly gets sharper than VG-10 and S30V, and holds that edge for longer than either of those steels

i'm a skeptic, so i'm testing it out, putting it through hard use as an EDC, to see if it's as good as it's fans say it is...

Hey jig,

Welcome to the forums :). If the store has a "Waved" version of the Delica or Endura, you should check it out. Ask the salesperson to give you and example of how it works. Or if you want to see it now:

http://www.emersonknives.com/VideoDemosArticles.htm

Scroll down to the section that says "Wave Feature" and pick a clip. If you're considering a knife for self defense, make sure you check out the Endura as well as the Delica to see which size you prefer.

Hi Jig,
Pinoy ka pala...by the way the Delica is one of the best knife I have used (I have a Delica2) which I bought in Florida last 2002. When I was still in the Philippines, I used to go to Hahn Manila (I think they have a couple of Spydies available).

I've carried a Military in CPM 440V for 8 years, if that means anything. On and off, the Keating Chinook II, a waved Endura, and the manix, but I keep returning to the Military model.
