I'm curious?

Okay, I really have to ask.

I see so many posts abut who uses what knife in a TV show, or movie, and how some have to have that knife. So, I am curious, What does it make a difference what knife/gun/car or whatever is used by a fictional person in a TV show? I mean, it's a TV show, with no connection to any reality in this universe. I can see the love of knives, I have many more knives than I need for this lifetime or the next. But they are all purchased with the use in mind of who I am and what I am going to be doing with it. But I'm really puzzled by the amount of posts I see, where some guy on a TV show uses brand X knife, and a ton of people post the next day about how they have to get one of the brand X knives like so-and-so used. It's like the insanity of the early 1970's where Clint Eastwood mae a movie with the main character using a gun that was not a huge seller, but after Dirty Harry came out you couldn't find a S&W model 29 anywhere.

I've always been mystified by the Hollywood draw.

Me too. I saw Tom Cruise use a Sebenza in "Collateral"...had to have one.
Saw the bad guy in "Kiss the Girls" with a Sog Pentagon...had to have one.
I saw a few Gerbers used in "The Walking Dead".....didn't want any of them. Probably the only
movie/TV show where as the knives didn't impress me.:D

Well, NCIS made me chuckle this year, when Gibbs pulls out a handful of Zero Tolerance 302's from his desk. Funny because they were discontinued, Gibbs knew they were limited and bought a handful. I got a Zero Tolerance 301 because I thought it looked neat on TV, went online and gathered more information about it. I didn't get it because Mark Harmon carries one on tv, although I did first notice it there. I have seen some really nice blades in the movies. Daniel Winkler's work on Last of the Mohicans is stellar. This is going on twenty years ago, and his blades/gunstock war clubs and other pieces could be characters in and of themselves. The only other knife that got me buzzed up lately was the Muela bowie Pierce Brosnan had in Seraphim Falls, and that was mainly because of the handle. Other than that, it's great to see movie or tv characters carrying a good knife, especially if they aren't using it to disembowel someone ala Hannibal Lecter.

No, reading the Traditional subforum is much more dangerous for my wallet than watching the boob tube.

I do have to admit that I've wanted a Conan the Barbarian sword since I was a kid. The one he finds in the tomb, the one that was originally designed by Jody Samson, knifemaker extraordinaire. After determining I didn't need a claymore broadsword to carve up the Set cult when I was 12, and finding out that all of the Conan swords out there were junk when I was about 18, if I could afford to have a custom version, I would still get it in a heartbeat.

And promptly cut my leg off...

exposure pure and simple... for instance the outlaw josey wales is one of my favorite movies has been since i was a kid (no cable, pre VCR etc.), movie always stuck with me, one of a few reasons i started reading about black powder firearms, oh the 1860 colt:D (many featured in the movie, along with the conversions, etc.), that and a handful of other influences were kinda my gateway into it. Yes a lot of people buy things because of movies and then forget them just as quickly, which is a shame but for every misguided soul that drops big money to get decked out like their favorite character theres the 41 year old dude that never forgot josey wales and spent a good while reading about 'em, is finally taking the plunge into percussion era black powder shootin... 'cept i'll be burning charcoal rather than shooting cartridge conversions :)
Movies and tv are a powerful medium, and really no different than books theres good and bad, sometimes the prop guys throw in somethin us knife nuts can yammer on about and look amazing to our loved ones:D

Gene, it's usually me yammering on about so and so's knife, and making friends and family's eyes roll, but I digress.

I've never bought a knife because I saw it on TV or a movie but I've had many people give me the cheap $9.99 Rambo style Survival Knife because they saw it in the movies and me bein' the only knife guy they knew, they had to get it for me.

Buying the "gear" of leading characters can be a way for people to immerse themselves into stories, extend the entertainment into their own lives, and/ or to imitate the characters they enjoy watching.

I don't think this kind of phenomenon applies only to hollywood movies, either.

For example, this last year I started to re-read The Lord of the Rings and other Tolkien books.

After finishing The Hobbit, I was inspired to buy a large Churchwarden pipe and some "Halfling's leaf" before reading the remaining books. (guilty!:D)

It was a way to immerse myself into the story, and it just so happens that the churchwarden (Gandalf style) pipe is great to hold while reading a book.

It is only a matter of time until read the books again, and by then who knows? I might try applying rogaine to the tops of my feet.

:D

Why buy anything? We all have reasons that make sense to us. No need to try and understand it unless you are in marketing;)

I don't watch tv or movies so I generally just pass those threads and posts by. If an actor/actress/personality endorses something it means absolutely nothing to me.

Seeing a nice knife in a movie or TV show isn't going to make me break out the credit card and buy one, but I can't deny that I get a kick out of seeing nice knives on the screen. Daryl's Busse in "The Walking Dead", Tom Cruise's lefty Sebenza in "Collateral", Pierce Brosnan's one-of-a-kind custom William Henry in "The Matador", the myriad of knives (especially autos) in "24", etc. It's just nice to see filmmakers use nice knives - ones that the characters would actually use - rather than junk prop knives.

Dude! Darryl's got the Busse Team Gemini all over The Walking Dead!!! Gotta keep your eyes open!

That knife isn't impressive enough to make up for a few Gerber machetes?

Gerber just provided some funding for the show in exchange for having their blades in it. Since stupid people eat their knives up like candy they've got money lying around...

I actually think its kind of realistic that they have some Gerber knives because Gerber sells a TON of stuff that ends up sitting in garages, basements, etc.

I gotta say, that's one of the coolest knife cameos I've ever seen.
That meth-head knows his knives. :)

Just curiosity I suppose. I can't ever recall purchasing a knife because it was on television or in a movie.
