I'm curious?

Buying the "gear" of leading characters can be a way for people to immerse themselves into stories, extend the entertainment into their own lives, and/ or to imitate the characters they enjoy watching.

I don't think this kind of phenomenon applies only to hollywood movies, either.

For example, this last year I started to re-read The Lord of the Rings and other Tolkien books.

After finishing The Hobbit, I was inspired to buy a large Churchwarden pipe and some "Halfling's leaf" before reading the remaining books. (guilty!:D)

It was a way to immerse myself into the story, and it just so happens that the churchwarden (Gandalf style) pipe is great to hold while reading a book.

It is only a matter of time until read the books again, and by then who knows? I might try applying rogaine to the tops of my feet.

:D

The Churchwarden is a toff’s pipe. Working men smoked something stubby that they could hold in their teeth while hoeing a row or digging a canal.

Bilbo was proclaiming himself a Hobbit of means. :D

How do you clean a Churchwarden? Do they make extra long pipe cleaners them?

Dude! Darryl's got the Busse Team Gemini all over The Walking Dead!!! Gotta keep your eyes open!

That knife isn't impressive enough to make up for a few Gerber machetes?

Gerber just provided some funding for the show in exchange for having their blades in it. Since stupid people eat their knives up like candy they've got money lying around...

I actually think its kind of realistic that they have some Gerber knives because Gerber sells a TON of stuff that ends up sitting in garages, basements, etc.

Yeah it's all about product placement these days, and how much a company will pay to get their product screen time, ever seen a movie that doesn't have a can of Coke in it,

Ever seen a movie that didn't have a pair of pants in it? ;)

Personally, it doesn't matter a bit to me who the actor or character is carrying a given knife. Whether my first exposure to a knife that I like the looks of is on a tv show, online, or on a guy at work makes no difference. If I like something that's all there is to it. Sometimes we'll see something unfamiliar for the first time on tv and there is no reliable way to describe it other than asking, "What was that busse that Darryl had in walking dead last night?"

I've never used a Team Gemini, but I have had some thick Busses. I was more of a Swamp Rat guy. Still, it's great to see one character with a "good" knife on the Walking Dead. One episode he was whittling some arrow shafts with his knife. Not always using his knife to splatter zombie brains.

I do like some of the knives in the old movies, like Jeremiah Johnson. "Here you go pilgrim, sharp enough to scale a fish!".

It's well known that Gerber has a product placement deal in the "Walking Dead", but is anything known about Daryl's Busse? Was Jerry involved, or was someone high-up in the development in the show a fan of his knives? Because, as far as knives go, Busse is pretty obscure to the masses. You can't buy them in stores, they don't have much of an advertising campaign (do they take out ads in Blade? I wouldn't know...), etc. There has to be a reason that the Team Gemini was chosen for Daryl's knife.

Yes, they've been advertising in Blade for many years.

I'm with you on this one jackkife. I wouldn't buy anything just because I saw it on a TV show or movie.
But it is nice to see them using quality knives at times. Its usually some piece of junk.

I see so many posts abut who uses what knife in a TV show, or movie, and how some have to have that knife. So, I am curious, What does it make a difference what knife/gun/car or whatever is used by a fictional person in a TV show?

Don't you rmember the 80's and how everyone had to have a "Rambo knife"?
Televison is where most folks get their perceptions of reality from. It only makes sense that they'd see it a guide to what gear to horde as well.

Media in whatever form has had knives and swords that inspire and tempt us since media of any form have existed.
In India we have millennia old legends of swords that would cut through stone and so on and so forth. Even Lewis Carrol's Vorpal Blade is a well know cultural meme today. Need I mention Excalibur......
These days our dominant entertainment media are cinema and TV. Logical progression I guess.

Walking Dead posted something on their FB page, an interview with Norman Reedus. They asked for audience questions. I asked if that knife was Norman's. What the hell, who knows...

He must have at least some common sense, no stories about him accidentally chopping off his hands in the news.

purely speculation, but if gerber is the anybody can get it brand (and it is in reality) then daryl having something above and beyond the norm makes sense, he's the one who's lived a completely different life than the others and even makes reference to getting lost in the woods as a kid and surviving, logic would dictate that he probably is a bit more picky with his equipment, at least the important stuff. I would think that somebody in the prop department knows a thing or two about knives

I did not read all the posts before this one and im not sure if this answer was given, people as viewers usually like to imagine themselves in the said situation, usually badass alpha get you ready for war kind of movies,Commando,Cobra,Predator,Dirty Harry and so on,it gives people an outlet or a way to reenact their fantasies, cool knives usually only appear in badass movies and every man likes to feel manlier, even if they are already on top of a mountain fighting a bear while their wife is barefoot pregnant in the kitchen.
Personally i want the TGLB from The Walking Dead,I've got bigger and badder weapons than that but Daryl is my favourite character and the knife is INFI....dat dere consumarism.

Stallone's "Cliffhanger" made me buy a Spyderco Endura which kick started my knife buying habit.

As far as the original post, it's just a matter of exposure. You find out about knives from websites, articles, reviews, forums, magazines, knife shows, stores, friends and even forums. TV and movies are just another medium. So when a knife pops up in the screen, it's no different than when one shows up in a magazine or even here in this forum. I doubt any of us have ever bought a knife that they've never seen or heard of - so it doesn't really matter where you were exposed to said knife.

Oh and for the opposite: I do get a small kick when I see a knife I already own on TV or in films. I guess it started when I was a kid, and saw that I was already carrying a Swiss Army Knife way before MacGyver (my childhood hero).
